Description WARNING! RIDICULOUS FANGIRLING AHEAD! Proceed with caution.

When I heard that Telltale Games was not only releasing a new MI game, but remaking SMI, all I wanted was to find a few people to squee happily with…but few of my RL friends really care about MI, they seemed really confused as to what was so good about it, and when I tried to find fan forums, all the fans were doing was complaining (about a game that hadn’t even released yet…some fans…. So, I decided to do what I’ve always done and just celebrate by myself, and the first step to this was to replay 1 – 4 (hopefully before the new game comes out, though it looks like I’ll be cutting it close). Midway through 2, I was struck with the thought that I wanted to draw the main character. Not just one, but ALL of him…and literally “struck”, I had to leave the game where it was to draw the picture before it went out of my head.

So all five guys in this image? One character, Guybrush Threepwood, Mighty Pirate, as he progressed through the games.

Starting on the left, they are as follows:
-In The Secret of Monkey Island we meet the lovably inept, ridiculously named pirate wannabe, Guybrush Threepwood, and follow him on his quest to become a pirate as he crosses path with the beautiful and snarky governor Elaine Marley, and the terrifying Ghost Pirate LeChuck.
Quote: “Somehow I knew in hell there would be mushrooms.”
-In Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, Guybrush is fresh off his adventures in the first game with a snazzy coat and manly beard. Unfortunately, Elaine has ditched him and no one believes he beat the ghost pirate, so he decides to show them all by finding the fabulous treasure of Big Whoop! Little does he know, the Zombie Pirate LeChuck has been raised and wants revenge!
Quote: “She named her DOG ‘Guybrush’?!”
“Yeah, I don’t get it either. She said it was because he’s dumb and helpless and always getting in the way.”
-In The Curse of Monkey Island, after the nearly nonsensical ending to MI2, we find Guybrush floating aimlessly in the ocean, only to drift into danger, adventure, a nasty voodoo curse, and the Demon Pirate LeChuck!
Quote: “Didn’t you have a beard last time I saw you?”
“Yeah, and it was really cool too!...I wonder what ever happened to it…”
-In Escape From Monkey Island, Guybrush and Elaine decide to kick back and relax now that their adventuring is over, but a run-in with an Australian developer and (you guessed it!) the Ghost/Zombie/Demon Pirate LeChuck brings us once again to the shores of Monkey Island!
Quote: “As handy as a two pronged cactus would be, I’d really rather not stick one in my pants.”

The fifth one on the end is Guybrush from the new game, Tales of Monkey Island, which – as of this posting – hasn’t been released yet. I gave him a sword because he’s holding one in a lot of promotional images, though I doubt they’ll let you keep something as useful as a sword in-game.

These are my own interpretations of Guybrush based on my perceptions as I was playing. While the latter three have much more defined characters, the first two were pretty open for interpretation. Here’s how the first four look, so you can see the pixel-y goodness: [link]
I’m very disappointed with my Monkey Island 1 Guybrush…he looks too much like one of my own characters, and I don’t want him to look like my characters, I want him to look like Guybrush. I wish I’d seen the redesigns for the re-make of that game before drawing this, but I didn’t…
I’m actually pretty happy with my rendition of Monkey Island 2 Guybrush, even though it’s painfully obvious that the new design (5) is supposed to be 2’s design in 3’s style. Like I said, this was my interpretation, and I always saw him in 2 as being a bit shorter and stockier – I recognize that that’s just a limitation of working with pixels when you put a coat on him, but that’s how I saw it. And doesn’t his hair look brown there? I’m just saying. So while he looks ridiculously different from the others, that’s just how I saw him in that game.
Guybrush in 3 always felt ridiculously tall to me. Haha! 3 was by far my favorite of the series, but I loved them all. (Yes, even 4)

I want to say more, but this is stupidly long already, so I’ll just leave you with a few links.
If you want to see why I love MI so much, the opening of the Curse of Monkey Island is a good place to start. (And if you want to skip the opening theme when it starts playing, go to about 4:10 for the animation to start up again.)
[link]
They’re re-making the first game, Secret of Monkey Island (YAY! Dominic Armato!), here’s some info on that here:
[link]
Lastly, here’s Tell-Tale’s site for Tales of Monkey Island. Designed so that even newcomers to the series can enjoy it, if you wanna jump in here.
[link]

I’m ridiculously excited, I never though adventure games would be revived, and thought even less that we’d get more MI! Life is good!

EDITh Damn! Part of the Ocean vanished!

I agree with that, though to be fair, the dialogue makes it clear he just has peach fuzz, they just didn't have enough pixels to represent that properly at the time.

Wow this is really good, it's nice to see Guybrush in every outfit he had.
Sadly I just played the first three and the fourth game just a little bit.
Still really great

Thanks!

If you ever get the chance, I do recommend the Tell Tale game, but honestly, if you've played the first three then you're pretty rad in my book. :high five:
(I have a soft spot for the fourth game, but it is DEEPLY flawed. )

Yeah I personally hated the keyboard controls in the fourth one

dragonsong12 In reply to MetalByakko [2015-06-18 13:34:05 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, tank controls were the best

The story wasn't great either, which is a big minus for me.

But the humor was still pretty good, and it was the first of the series I bought for myself, so I can't hate on it too hard, even if I TOTALLY understand why other people do.

MetalByakko In reply to dragonsong12 [2015-06-18 14:01:50 +0000 UTC]

Well as long as the humor is good, the game couldn't be THAT bad. I mean if you think about the ending of the second game, the story of each game was always just a big mind fuck. I personally think people got more picky in that regard. The graphics weren't so bad either, but like I said the controls...oh well

dragonsong12 In reply to MetalByakko [2015-06-18 19:30:43 +0000 UTC]

I think it's what caused the problems with Grim Fandango too, since it was made on the same engine and had the same control issues (but was otherwise flawless...still steamed it got blamed for the "death of adventure games".)

Oh man, don't get me started on the ending of 2! That game was awesome for me right up until the ending, but endings like that are a personal pet peeve of mine. Haha, kudos to the third one for making an attempt to get rid of it (even though the attempt was kind of a mess too. )

MetalByakko In reply to dragonsong12 [2015-06-18 19:40:10 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure about Grim Fandango, I mean that game was also an experiment in 3D adventure games and it had his charms^^

Yeah I heard actually they planned from the beginning just doing 2 games and it should be some kind of surprise that Guybrush was a kid all along and just had all the adventures on his own....one have to wonder why a kid wants to cross dress, but...hey who knows. I really liked three and that they said it was just a trap by LeChuck and all...at least we had SOME conclusion. I would had been happy if the series would had ended with 3, but maybe that is just me. XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dragonsong12 In reply to MetalByakko [2015-06-19 13:00:37 +0000 UTC]

I'd say Grim Fandango had more than charms. I think it still stands as one of the best adventure games ever made!...but that sadly didn't stop it from selling poorly and causing adventure games to go away for a long time...
...pretty much until TellTale came along, actually.

When the monkey island series ended with 4, that was honestly pretty bad. As much as I can play and enjoy 4, it has some serious story problems and was a TERRIBLE ending to the series.
...but now that TellTale put out Tales from Monkey Island, 4 isn't the end of the series anymore. I still recommend the 5th game pretty highly, even if you just look up a let's play or video walkthrough, because it actually does have a pretty good story to it (and probably one of the more epic endings to an adventure game), and even though it ends on a cliffhanger and I'd LOVE to see TellTale release another one, I think 5 is actually a pretty good ending to the series.

Bwahahahaaarghhh! Monkey Island. It is my childhood. Gosh, I was so over the moon when they announced Tales of Monkey Island! I'm assuming you got a hold of the Special Edition of LeChuck's Revenge as well? It's been a pretty awesome year and a bit for Monkey Island fans indeed!

Your fan art here is awesomenesssss! So many Guybrushes! Haha, it's so colourful and I love how you've got all the different styles of Guybrush. Mwahahaaargh and LeChuck, of course XD It's such a great series, and it makes me so happy to see there are gazillions of other fans around the world who've got as much enjoyment out of them as myself and my family. I always felt it was a little under-rated and overlooked by many here, as not many people have heard of it...Shame. MURRAAAAYY, MWAAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!

The special editions were great! I gotta replay MI2 again and listen to all the commentaries. I can't believe I have two video games now with commentaries. God, I love Monkey Island!

Thanks for the comment (even if I did reply slow) and for geeking out with me!

lol No worries at all, "Late Reply" is my middle name for one, and IRL's comes first!

And yeah it's true. Two good friends of mine have enjoyed the delights of Monkey Island since childhood, so I'm happy enough with that, but mostly when you mention it, you're faced with a bit of a "O_o;;" face D:

It's awesome when you do know someone who knows it though, especially when your other friends don't. There's nothing more fun that talking in Monkey Island jargon with someone else who understands it XD lol And awwww, yeah there's always the online communities and everything which is awesome too :3

Hahaa, yeah the commentaries are great fun. Those guys are hilarious XD Hahaa XD I don't want to spoil anything, but...just hah XD

The special editions were indeed great! They're so snazzy looking and the music sounds better than ever. And of course the voice acting is a real bonus; I think they did an excellent job in LeChuck's Revenge :3 The first one's voice acting seemed a bit flat in places though, which was a shame. Even though it was totally awesome any way, just for the sake of them re-releasing it again after so long ;_; I've been after another legitimate copy of those games for YEARS :< Those Bounty Pack discs were expensive D:

I had the original Amiga versions, with all the hundreds of disks...and with the absence of floppy disk drives on modern laptops, there's been no way to make them playable again...STILL, I'm holding onto them as an antique XD Still got the boxes and the dial a pirate things Awesomeeeee...The fourth game is kicking around somewhere at home...I have no idea where the 3rd one went, which is a shame...That one had such a cool style :3

lololol Talk about geeking out! XD Sorry, I guess I got carried away! HIGH FIVE, fellow Monkey Island fan!

I just started playing the series like a month ago or 2 and all ready finished EVERYTHING.

Most of the games are so awesome in every way. No doubt about it. My inner fangirl is now running like crazy. Sad that it's all over (hopefully for only a few years)

The least good of them all is the forth one - the rest is just awesome. Especially the second one.
The fifth one is also amazingly great. Guybrush rules!

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

dragonsong12 In reply to shiramonderer [2010-04-07 20:13:39 +0000 UTC]

These games are kind of amazing, aren't they? And once you get sucked in YOU CAN NEVER LEAVE! I still regularly replay them all through.

I think I just about exploded when Tales was announced (as can be evidenced by all the fangirling in the artist's notes of this, haha!)

I defenitely agree that the fourth game is the worst, but it has some good jokes in it, so I won't shun it TOO hard (why did the good jokes have to be wrapped around that terrible plot?) The third game is my favorite, but I have a soft spot for animation and for Mr. Armato.

Tales was DEFENITELY a worthy addition to the series, and I really hope TellTale makes more! With the exception of the Bone game, they really know how to put together a good adventure game.

Eep! Now I'M fangirling. Thanks! And YAY GUYBRUSH!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

shiramonderer In reply to dragonsong12 [2010-04-08 05:57:45 +0000 UTC]

The best thing about the third is the beautiful art and animation. Best out of all the other games. (PLZ remind me who is Mr. Armato...)
Although, my favorite of all time is the 2nd, I find the new one just as good. The actual nice 3D animation, the jokes, the plot, even some of the art (especially on spinner cay) aren't half bad. There was a point inside this manatee that I laughed my ass off. The only place it happened before was on the 2nd game. The only thing the 5th was lack is insult sword fighting - which is one of my favorite things to do in a game.

The series rock and if I'm to ever play those games again I think I'll skip the forth. Although, it did has some good parts, it actually had a point where I wanted the game to end already and that's not cool.

Say... Who's you favorite MI character?

dragonsong12 In reply to shiramonderer [2010-04-09 19:51:15 +0000 UTC]

Dominic Armato is the voice actor who plays Guybrush Threepwood.

I...have a hard time deciding on a favorite character. I love Guybrush of course. Elaine is awesome. LeChuck is a fantastic villain. Murray is hilarious.
...though I think Morgan LeFlay from the newer games might be some sort of special form of awesome. It's hard to call.

Who's your favorite?
