=Avatards-Anonymous contest entry. Challenge: one or more Avatar characters in masquerade clothes that match their respective personalities.

Sokka:
I wanted him in a military uniform of some type because he is a warrior and military stagiest. I’m not sure this is applicable to any real military branch; it’s more of a composite. Blues for the Water Tribes; the diamonds on his pants are the traditional jester pattern, symbolizing his comedy aspect. The sword should be obvious in its representation. Why the hat? Well, you could call it a stand-in for his helmet, but really it’s just because I love a guy in a hat.

Toph:
Greens indicative of the Earth Kingdom. The gold pattern on her corset is similar to the patterns seen in the EK throne room. Also all the gold indicates her high social standing. It’s hard to see she’s holding a fan but on it is a symbol of her family (can be seen better in the detail shot). The fan itself is a nod to her acknowledgment (albeit grudgingly) of Suki. The peacock feather has to do with her pride in her abilities, and in herself. The flower in her hair is a peace rose, which is a symbol of unrequited love.

Now, all the Tokka shippers will be happy with this picture, but I have to admit displaying these two as a couple wasn’t my intention. I wanted to draw Sokka because he’s my favorite and I wanted a girl so that I could do a pretty dress. I know I could’ve picked any girl but I figured Toph would likely go along with this undercover plan if Sokka suggested it, and I wanted a chance to draw her in a frilly dress again (because I’m evil ). I think Toph’s crush on Sokka is really cute but I’m more of a SokkaxSuki shipper.
This took me a really long time to do but I'm very happy with it. If you’re wondering what the significance of the pillars are, when I got there I gave up, so there is none. I also have an alternate version of this that has Sokka’s mask in white.
