Description This is based on a reference photo I used from the lovely ~larafairie-stock which you can find here [link]
I thought the pose was wonderful and was instantly inspired! The title emerged due to my becoming mesmerised with the act of painting, which to me is almost like a kind of faery magic in itself.

*EDIT* - I just wanted to say thank you so much to everyone who has given me such wonderful feedback and positive comments about this painting since it got a DD.
I feel really overwhelmed by everyone's kindness - thank you lovely people!

This is gorgeous. I love the colors and the painting technique, the way it "flows". Would love to learn how you did this <3

Thanks for your sweet comment.
I actually photograph and video the processes for all my paintings now, but this one is over five years old, so I didn't do that back then.
It's watercolour. approximately A3 and on cold press watercolour paper (which has a textured surface) Back then I used dry pan watercolours (I use tubes now and will never go back!) so it was harder to blend the colours from dry pans.

I started by drawing out the figure and then did light washes for the lightest areas of skin tone. Once they'd dried I then built up the darker shadows and tones on the face, shoulders and hand. After that I painted the hair and then finished with the background. I wanted to give a loose feel to the backround so I used water to help spread the paint pigment and 'dabbed' with the brush to get that shaped, blotchey effect.
Finally I added the details to the magic in her hand.

Hope that helps!

I am actually going to get some water colour paints and experiment soon! I did some water colour in high school and I was fairly good at it (not near what your talent is) and I enjoyed it. You have fully inspired me to give it another go after all these years! I am even working on a drawing of my sister right now that I will finish in pencil crayon and then do another copy in water colour. I am so excited and I hope you can give me some pointers once you see it posted as to what I can improve on. Thank you again!

That's so cool!
If you are going to buy new watercolours you've got a choice of pans (dry watercolours) or tubes. The pans are easier for beginners, but since I started using tubes (wet straight from the tube) I've never gone back to pans again. I just keep those for when I'm travelling because they're less messy.
Tubes give you much more freedom to mix and blend colours.
Also make sure you buy some decent watercolour paper, it makes so much more difference to the end result.

Good luck!! Give me a shout when you've done it. I'd love to have a look

Okay, thank you for the advice. I did go and buy some and I bought tubes. It is what we used in high school, I have never used pans. I hope it turns out okay. I will definitely have to get some watercolour paper. I am very excited to give them a try. I will let you know when I am all done!

i was looking at my faves and noticed that this one was featured as a Daily Deviation. A very late Congrats! I think that everyone who comes to your page likes something that they see if not everything, but with so many people producing things it is still easy to get lost in a endless ocean of other artists. So while I wasn't overly surprised to see it, I was definitely happy to see some attention being drawn to your work.

Cheers I was chuffed to bits when I saw I'd got a DD. I didn't think for a second anyone would actually think my artwork was good enough to put forward for one. I got an influx of visitors and comments which was very uplifting and inspired me to keep painting at a turbulent time in my life last year. I got another DD last month too, for my Rainbow Priestess... I'm sure that's mainly because she has rather colourful boobies!

Really like the way you balance the colors -- it's colorful, but there's nice restraint to it, the colors set the mood of the painting. They pull the viewer in. Wonderful!

I really can't remember if I've commented this before so I must say: lovely piece! When I first saw it I was amazed how much it reminds me of one of the main characters in a story I'm working on. She has the same haircut (so do I btw) and the colours you've used are kinda like her colours in the story... blah, hard to explain. Anyway, once again wonderful work.
