Description This one originally started out at as a color study, because I was trying to apply what I learned in my color theory class. I just went with it and decided to actually do something with it lol.
Let me know if you guys like it! I love feedback

Hi, I’m here from  .

I really like the way you contained the sky in an oval, then had the water and some of the leaves spill out of it. It really makes it look like she’s in a separate world, but it’s starting to flow into ours. It’s a really cool concept.

For the purposes of displaying it on DA, I think it would have had even more impact if the oval had been complete at the top instead of being cut off a bit, and if the white had been replaced by the blue of DA’s background, so it looked like the picture was just floating there instead of being contained by the white background.

I love the color palate and the swirly clouds behind the focal character. You picked a lovely shade for her eyes, and the water is beautiful; almost realistic, but with a touch of surrealism to it.

Your anatomy looks fairly good, aside from the slight lopsidedness NathaAmore pointed out. There are just a couple pieces that are missing or very hard to see, namely her collarbones, throat tendons, and the parts of the nose on the outside of the nostril. Granted, that might have been a stylistic choice; it depends on how much realism you’re going for.

The one major weakness I saw in this picture is the relationship between the shading and the light direction. You’ve got the kind of shading that looks really good at first glance, but when I start to look more closely, I realize that some things that should have shadows on them don’t, and some parts of her hair that should have some light on them are instead pitch black.

To help you out, I’ll provide some specifics. For the purposes of this comment, “left” and “right” refer to the viewer’s left and right, and I’m assuming the light is coming from ahead of the character and slightly above.

1. The hair doesn’t cast any shadows on the face, even though some strands are between the light source and the face. This makes her look a bit two-dimensional, as if her hair is flat against her head.

2. The plants don’t cast any shadows on the character.

3. The hair outside the highlights is totally black. To show the curve of her head and make her look more three-dimsensional, I suggest having bright highlights at the front, dimmer highlights in the middle, and black at the very edges.

4. There is no shadow under her nose and lower lip, but there should be. Granted, there’s a bit of a darker shade in her upper lip dent, but the nose should cast a bit more of a shadow unless the light source is lower than I think it is.

5. The bun on the right side of her head has a near-black shadow on the bottom, but the bun on the left has very little shadow.

6. The leaves’ “shading” is mostly just a gradient and some dappling. It looks good at first glance, but isn’t very realistic. Again, this depends on how much realism you want, but to make it look realistic, the sides of the leaves closest to the light should be highlighted, and the undersides of the leaves, as well as any parts of the plant that have shadows cast on them by other parts, should be shaded.

That’s all the advice I have for this picture. The concept, character design, water, sky, and shading are all beautiful; it just needs a little bit of improvement on the anatomy and staying consistent with the light direction if you want to make it more three-dimensional and realistic.

I hope that helps!

Thank you for your comment! This actually really put some things into perspective for me. I am working on bettering my shading and lighting techniques.

You're very welcome! I've found that keeping the light direction consistent, and remembering to put light and shadows in all the places where they should be, are some of the most common challenges for artists. In my time in ProjectComment, I've found that, if there's a flaw in a picture's shading, it usually has to do with staying true to the light direction. It's especially tough when there are a lot of things casting shadows on a lot of other things!

Hello there, I'm from ProjectComment  <3
I want to start off by saying this a very beautiful piece, and you an excellent job on the water, like I'm really jealous as to how amazing it looks.
Continuing on, cause I could compliment this piece for days.
Going to start this off by starting at the ace, it's a little lopsided.
The chin is pointing more towards the right and doesn't match up with the nose and mouth, This isn't that big of an issue and can be fixed pretty easily, I would say just create lines (within the sketching faze)  to make sure you don't accidentally male the face lopsided.
Speaking of the mouth, that too is lopsided (It's not as noticeable as the chin though) the left side is raised slightly, really not that big of an issue and took me a bit to notice it, but I thought I should mention it anyways.
Those leaves look really good, it really matched well with the water and gives it nice organic feel to it, so great job on that!
Continuing on, I guess the only thing I can mention is that I feel you should make your shadows darker on the person, you have dark shadows on everything else so it makes the person look a little out of place, and there would probably be some highlights on the person's skin because of the water.
Overall I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help, but the piece is very beautiful and I can't wait to see what others pieces you'll create!

I love your comment! I actually noticed all these issues when I was painting it, and I tried to fix them as best I can. I have a history of lopsided faces haha I am still working on it.
Thank you for the compliment on the water! I might make a tutorial on it. Let me know if that is something you would want to see???
