you can fix the color dulling with a simple channel mixer, most art programs will have one. just turn every color up in its own channel.
i don't know if you have an art program like PSP or Photoshop or GIMP but if you're using a scanner now, i suggest you get one. n_n you'll learn to love it and your work will thank you.
i think this is lovely. but i haven't seen the real-life original, and i do know that scans can add and take away a lot from a picture.
good luck!

Thank you very much for the tips, it's very much appreciated- I'll certainly attempt that soon and see how things turn out. c:

Thanks so much! The picture was too big for my scanner so a lot of the background ended up getting cut out, but I'm pretty happy with how much detail is visible here. Those scales were a bit time consuming, but nothing compared to that grass. xD
The pose was fun; I'm tried to focus on making sure the torso and tail... fit well, without looking awkward.

Yeah, I bet this took ages.
I can definitely see the effort put into it, though. It really does pay off. c: The colours and atmosphere work really well conveying that bog/swamp-ish look, especially the murky waters and the dark horizon. And of course you can only get better. You didn't get to where you are without practice, and backgrounds are simply another aspect of it. Better than leaving them out altogether, of course. *cough*
I love the detail of Hshan's scales--I bet they wouldn't have been picked up as well by the camera, either. D:
And I'm really glad to hear you have a scanner. The difference in colour and detail is immediately noticeable and brilliant. A huge leap in quality; I can see how irritated you must've been with how your camera captured things before.
Keep up the awesome work. Your improvement is really noticeable. c:

And everything green was in pencil, as I no longer have any green markers that work for it....D:
Actually, way too much of this was in pencil.
Thank you so much. I'm thinking of putting a photo (in greyscale to cover the hideous colour the camera made) to show just how much more to the background there is.
Hshan's scales? They... sort of show up. In a weird way.
Thanks so much again, that's so encouraging to hear. c':
