Description
I think this is the first picture I've done in nearly a decade! I cannot take credit for the lineart though: that was done by my friend NakaseArt . I guess in a way it is fitting for my first piece of art in years to be another colab, since that is how I originally got started back in the day
I wrote a quick story to go with the picture as well. It happens after the events in my story Draythix's Awakening (Dragon Merge/TF)
The artwork was done by NakaseArt and myself. She did the sketch, and I colored it.
The characters and setting in the story belong to me.

Faintly glowing runes had been etched into the stone walls surrounding the heavy wooden door. It was hard to tell if the mage’s goal had been to keep intruders out or to keep something trapped inside, but either way the passage of time had weakened the wards. Darion mused that it probably wouldn’t be very hard to breach them, though he questioned if it would be wise to do so.
For a moment Darion considered heading back to the surface to wait for his spirit dragon companion Draythix to return. The dragon was currently “pacifying” a pack of dire wolves they had found at the entrance to the ruins. This essentially meant that Draythix had possessed the entire pack and was relocating them to a place further from civilization while also feeding off their energy. In theory, by drawing some power from the wolves Draythix wouldn’t need as much of Darion’s own magic and life force for some time, so it would kill two birds with one stone. In the meantime however, that left Darion alone, powerless, and bored. Bored enough that he had taken it upon himself to examine the rest of the ruins himself.
Being in such a dangerous place without the dragon’s protection was both terrifying and exhilarating. Darion took the fear as a sign that he had become far too reliant on his powerful companion, and he felt that he needed to push himself to prove he could function on his own. After all, what was he going to do with himself if they ever found a way for Draythix to return home?
After resolving to keep pushing forward, Darion backed away from the doorway and began calling on his magical reserves. His power tended to be a bit raw without Draythix to focus it, but he figured dispelling a few wards should should be easy enough. A ball of blue light collected in his right hand, and after setting its elements to oppose the wards on the door he flug it forward. Light and electricity flared in all directions as the ball collided with the magical barrier, but after a few moments the lights faded and only darkness remained.
With the wards gone, the door easily opened inwards to reveal a pitch black room. Darion summoned a fresh light as he stepped inside, and gasped at what he saw. What appeared to be some sort of large dragon was rising up off the stone floor of the dungeon. At least Darion assumed it was a dragon of some sort; even though its horned head and wings looked distinctly draconic the rest of is body was distinctly serpentine. It was covered in red scales, with a yellow underbelly and black wing membranes. Its eyes glowed with a dangerous and… alluring green light.
Even though Darion had spent a long time studying dragons, it took him a moment to recognize the creature as a “Wyverex”. The creature fit the description he had read about that exotic type of dragon almost perfectly except for one odd detail: some of its coils seemed strangely compressed as if they had no flesh within them. As the creature drew itself up, it almost seemed like it was inflating and growing larger.
Darion had already been admitting to himself that breaking into this room had been a terrible mistake and was beginning to turn himself around as he felt a strange calm come over him. He found himself staring into the creature’s glowing eyes, and was drawn forwards. As he walked closer to the wyverex, its chest began opening up to reveal a hollow interior.
Upon seeing this, Darion realized that it was a type of symbiote. These creatures were rumored to have been created by mad blood mages in the distant past, and relied upon bonding with sentient beings to function. In a way, they were like Draythix in that regard but somewhat more like a living suit than a spirit. However, the more powerful the creature the symbiote was based on the more likely it would simply take over whoever it bonded it...
Despite recalling this danger, Darion found himself unconcerned. The creature was obviously friendly and needed his help. In fact, with this wyverex’s help, then he would surely be able to function better without relying so much upon Draythix. Without consciously thinking about it, he began taking off most of his clothes so that they wyverex would be able to bond with him more easily.
As he walked towards the creature, Darion began feeling an overwhelming sense that something was wrong. It felt as if some sort of haze had fallen over his thoughts. He paused and shook his head to clear it, but found himself drawn in by the creature’s eyes again. Slowly, he walked up and slipped one of his arms into the embrace of one of the wyverex’s wings. Its interior was strangely smooth, but seemed to turn sticky as it it closed around his arm as if to embrace it.
Pain shot through Darions’ arm as the symbiote began assimilating it, and he found himself momentarily snapped out of his stupor. It was too late however, when he tried pulling his arm out the creature’s body seems to simply stretch rather than release him. The wyverex hissed in anger at the attempt to escape and moved to further ensnare its prey. The creature’s seemed to partially liquify, and some of it got on Darion’s free arm and attached to it. Pain began surging through his body, and he sensed that the creature had already begun transforming him in preparation for their symbiosis.
Now that it had both of his arms, the wyverex’s serpentine body lifted him up off the ground to further impede any chances of escape. It began closing itself over him, and despite Darion’s best efforts he found that the creature still had enough of a hold over his mind that he could only offer token resistance. He kicked weakly at its serpentine coils as they surrounded him, but the impact barely made an impression on its surface. It only took a few moments for the symbiote’s chest to completely seal up around him.
For the moment Darion was suspended in the creature by his shoulders, but he could feel his body changing. It felt as if he was being pulled in all directions to fill its skin. Darion tried to call up his magic to burn the creature from the inside out, but unfortunately it was hard for him to think clearly. Only the tiniest blue spark answered his call. The creature seemed to laugh at his efforts, and the speed of the transformation increased. Darion’s body expanded in all directions to fill up the creature’s wings and serpentine coils. His head pushed upwards into the wyverex’s “mask”, and his face stretched to fit its jaws. Darion choked as even the creature’s mouth slipped into his and fit itself over his tongue and teeth. His growing horns and ear fins fit perfectly within the creature, and he found his eyes looking through the wyverex’s eye sockets. Within moments he felt it fusing with every inch of his skin and there was nothing he could do about it.
With the merge completed, Darion found his serpentine body moving on its own. It stretched and inhaled the damp dungeon air as if waking up from a long slumber. He tried to reassert control, and indeed he found that he could move their body slightly. However, the wyverex was stronger and more experienced at controlling its body. Darion found himself slithering quickly through the corridors for freedom. In a panic, he tried to stop his movements, but each success only lasted a moment before the wyverex took over again and continued making them slither forward.
The symbiote’s elation at finally being free filled Daron’s mind. Its thoughts and emotions were mixing with his and threatening to drown him out. The intoxicating feeling of having this new powerful body was overwhelming, and it was tempting to simply give into it. Darion fought with every ounce of willpower he had to avoid being overcome. It had been a stupid mistake to try to prove himself by opening that seal, but he had no intention of it being the end of him!
Sunlight hit Darion’s eyes as they moved to the surface, and he felt his wings stretch out to prepare for flight. If Darion hadn’t already flown as Draytix dozens if not hundreds of times he probably would have given into the wyverex right then and there, but flight was an old friend of his. Instead, Darion renewed his will to fight and suddenly forced their body to coil around a tree. The wyverex screeched with anger and fought to free itself, but Darion held fast with every ounce of willpower he had. He knew that his best chance was to hold out for Draythix to return since the spirit dragon could probably easily separate him from the rogue symbiote. All he needed to do was abandon his pride and hope his friend would save him before it was too late.
