Description
As the central peacekeeping force of the Shattered World, the Last Legion is equipped with a wide arsenal of weapons to deal with any threat they may encounter on the battlefield, whether it's a platoon of Morgulian commandos in the jungles of Ka'zyn, or a rampaging pack of revenants in a city. The weapons given to Last Legion infantry are a mixture of high fire rates and pure stopping power, with some elements carried over from the antique weapons carried by the Broken Legion back during the Elder Wars. They lack the output of Morgulian weaponry, but make up for it with more powerful rounds and explosives.
-M13 "Aggressor" Handgun: Carried by Legion officers, support personnel, and MPs, the Aggressor is a standard semiautomatic handgun which holds a 10-round magazine, and intended as a sidearm or backup weapon in case the soldier's main weapon runs dry. However, close-combat oriented regiments such as the Berckan Bastards carry an Aggressor as a primary weapon, alongside a sword and a bundle of grenades. The M13 is also extensively modifiable, in the form of added carbine stocks, barrel extensions, and extended magazines. One notable modification is the M13-A "Thunderbolt" carried by Major Lance Atkins, which has been modified to fire in full-auto.
-M50 "Invader" Assault Rifle: The M50 is the workhorse of the Legion military, built for a number of different battlefield roles ranging from a muddy trench network to the confines of urban combat. Its design incorporates an unusual circular integrated magazine with a wheel on the side not unlike an old wheellock rifle; while it may seem archaic, the internal clockwork of the Invader allows it to fire at a rate comparable to most Morgulian light machine guns, peppering foes with a hail of hot lead. It can also be adjusted to fire in semi-auto or three-round bursts, depending on the needs of the wielder, and once spent, additional bullets can be fed into the gun through the loading door beneath the wheel. Invaders come in two main patterns: the "urban" pattern shown here features a grenade launcher below the barrel, which can either fire small explosives, flares, smoke bombs, or M516 shells over a short distance to flush out entrenched enemies and clear bunkers. The "trench" pattern removes the grenade launcher and instead features a bayonet mounting below the main barrel of the rifle, making the Invader into an effective close-combat weapon. Pretty much every trencher in the Legion has cut their teeth using an M50, and still swears by it.
-M516 "Mandible" Shotgun: Also known as a "shoulder popper" by Legion grunts, the Mandible is a super heavy shotgun carried by support troopers and Ironsides battalions for situations that require a little extra punch. Despite appearances, the Mandible is in fact a double-barreled, break-action weapon that is opened by racking the pump below the main barrels; due to the large shells it fires, the Mandible requires an additional series of levers inside to support the break-action, as a simple hinge would not be enough to handle both the weight of the barrels and the recoil from firing. It is typically used to fire large buckshot loads within the confines of a trench, in tight urban quarters, or for shredding undergrowth in a jungle, but it can also fire large slugs for piercing armor, incendiary rounds that can double as flares, or miniature explosive slugs called "pop rockets." The gun also comes equipped with a fold-down leaf sight for use as an impromptu grenade launcher, should the wielder desire to use it as such.
-CAR-21 "Intruder" Carbine: The Intruder is the mainstay of Legion commando squads, incorporating a good deal of stopping power into a small package. Based upon the design of the M13, the Intruder boasts a twenty-round magazine and either semi-auto or burst-fire, making it ideal for close quarters combat, especially when backed up with a combat knife or sword and explosives. It can either be wielded as a rifle or as a very large sidearm, usually by Legion cavalrymen, and it has a fold-out foregrip to stabilize the barrel when fighting in tight quarters. A modification of this carbine, the CAR-21A, is wielded by Legion rocketmen battalions and is specially modified to fire in full auto, complete with an extended magazine and special "core burner" rounds for chewing through the hulls of enemy planes and aerial troopers. Officers who don't carry an M13 are sometimes known to carry Intruders as their sidearm of choice, preferring the greater range and stopping power of the carbine over the handgun.
-Smoke Grenade: Smoke grenades are standard-issue to frontline trencher battalions, intended for sowing confusion and distraction amongst the enemy ranks and allowing for the Legion troopers to close with their enemy while their foes are in disarray. Each grenade is loaded with a special alchemical mixture that produces clouds of thick, grey smoke for a period of a minute before the payload is finally exhausted, letting a trencher platoon cloak an enemy position in heavy clouds in a matter of seconds, making storming their position much easier. While the grenades are designed with a standard ring pull to engage the alchemical reaction, some trenchers have developed a technique involving threading their bandoliers through the rings of their smoke grenades, letting them pull the ball free and throw it one-handed, while keeping their other hand free or occupied with a weapon.
-Fragmentation Grenade: Jokingly referred to as "potato mashers," the long-handled fragmentation grenades of the Legion are designed for optimal range and devastation. The handle which makes up the main body of the explosive allows for Legionnaires to throw them like a tomahawk, giving them a greater range than a smoke grenade, and allowing for ease in lobbing them into enclosed enemy positions. To prime the grenade, instead of pulling a pin, the explosive head is twisted to engage an internal trigger with a ten-second fuse, giving the soldier ample time to throw the device before detonation. These explosives are typically assigned to Legion commando and sapper squads, but sometimes close-combat oriented squads will take a few along to supplement their blades and short-ranged firearms.
-Rifle Grenade: Rifle grenades are equipped to trencher specialist troopers to provide some additional firepower to their squads, usually on the front lines. The explosive head contains both a shaped and a fragmentation charge, connected to a contact detonator housed in the red tip. Once the detonator strikes a surface, usually the side of an enemy vehicle or golem, it detonates the shaped charge, letting the grenade burrow into its target before detonating the fragmentation charge and inflicting massive internal damage. Instead of being thrown, these grenades are intended to be fitted into the barrel of an M50 and launched using the force of the gun firing to drive them into enemy armored units. While effective, rifle grenadiers are subject to all manner of frustrations as they have to perform additional maintenance and cleaning on their rifles to keep them free from stray powder grains and bullet pieces.
-Combat Knife: Next to their M50s, every Legionnaire will swear by their trusty steel for getting them out of a jam. Combat knives are standard-issue to every Legion trooper regardless of rank, and have a multitude of uses apart from just stabbing through enemy troopers. They can be used to open food and drink tins, cut razor wire and vines, perform rough field surgery, carve markers into trees or wooden trench supports, clean grime out of rifles, and so on. Some combat knives, usually those of front-line battalions, come equipped with a bayonet mounting to clip onto the barrel of an M50 to turn it into an improvised spear in the event of a charge or trench raid. Others come with a spiked knuckleduster guard around the handle, letting the wielder punch and cave in skulls as well as stab with the blade, making this variant a favorite of commando squads.
-Trench Sword: The trench sword is a favorite of both officers and close-combat Legionnaire squads, keeping all the flexibility of the combat knife, but enhancing it with a longer and more durable blade that can cleave through enemy armor and carapace with greater ease. These blades come with a spiked "skullcrusher" guard and pommel standard, as well as a serrated edge that grants the wielder the ability to use the flat edge of the blade like a hacksaw for cutting through tough undergrowth or razor wire in the enemy lines. Berckan Legionnaires favor this option for their melee armament, usually adding a carbine or pistol to give themselves some short-ranged firepower. Trench swords are also one of the few melee weapons subjected to Legion modification, such as the sword "Judgment" carried by Major Curtis Thompson, incorporating a repeater into its barrel so it can function as an impromptu carbine.
