Karma’s ears flicked nervously as he followed Zafar towards the spring he had mentioned earlier. Each sound that he managed to catch made him flinch or jolt in surprise or fear. The stallion was still new to all of this, and he was mainly just following the old grump because he didn’t have much of a choice. He had never thought of how big the world truly was until now. He nickered nervously, causing the other stallion to roll his eyes without him noticing.

“Are we almost there-?” He jumped as a howl could be heard in the distance.
Zafar snorted. “Yes, now quit jumping like a scared colt and speed up, or we’ll never get there,” he grumbled. Karma nodded and picked up the pace to trot beside Zafar. He flinched as his leg still hurt, so he slowed down to a more comfortable pace, which the old stallion didn’t seem to mind much. As long as he kept up that is.
Soon they made it to the small spring promised. It was surrounded by large trees and thick bushes, creating a natural oasis hidden within the heart of the forest. The air was cooler here, and the scent of damp earth and fresh water mingled in a refreshing blend.
Karma’s eyes nervously scanned the surroundings, taking in the tranquil beauty of the scene. The water in the spring sparkled under the dappled sunlight, its surface rippling gently as a soft breeze swept through the trees. The sound of the water trickling over rocks filled the air, a soothing melody that offered a moment of respite from the tension that had gripped him ever since he arrived on the island.
Zafar watched him stare at the place in awe before clearing his throat, snapping the rookie out of his trance. “What are you waiting for? Get in the water,” he said.
“W-what?” Karma blinked several times before looking at the water. “B-But it looks deep! What if I drown?!” He asked.
“It’ll help with the pain in your leg,” Zafar huffed and rolled his eyes. “Here, I’ll show you it ain’t that deep anyway…” he grumbled. The old stallion went into the spring without a problem, demonstrating how shallow the water was. “See? Now get in here”
“O-Oh…” Karma slowly waded into the water after Zafar. He hesitated briefly before slowly laying down, soaking his leg and shoulder. It felt nice, relieving even.
There were several moments of silence that felt like an eternity. Karma awkwardly shifted uncomfortably and eventually stood up when the pain subsided and his leg felt better. He sighed quietly, aimlessly walking in the water, deep in thought. Suddenly, bushes rustled and birds chirped and squawked in protest. Zafar lifted his head in the direction of the commotion, ears twitching and tail swishing somewhat uneasily. Karma pinned his ears back, nervous and ready to make a run for it.
Out of the bushes sprinted a mare, light gold in color, running in a panic. Karma neighed in protest as she almost ran into him, and managed to skid to a stop in the water before any tragedy or incident struck. Karma shifted slightly, still overtaken by surprise from the sudden appearance of the mare. Zafar seemed to be more amused than anything as he kept his distance for now.
“I’m sorry I’m sorry I’m so so sorry-!” She stammered quickly as she caught her breath, repeating her apology over and over again. “I didn’t mean to- One moment I was- and now I’m- and you were-”
“Slow down miss,” Zafar’s cool voice overcame the rambling mare’s timid and apologetic tone. “Take a deep breath and tell us what happened…” he huffed.
The mare nodded. “R-Right,” she said. “I’m Anora-” she introduced herself. “I’m s-sorry I almost ran into you, I was running away from s-some wolves,” she said, her ears pinned back.
“Wolves?!” Karma said worriedly.
“D-don’t worry-! I lost them a while ago- but I kept running-” she explained.
Zafar nodded. “Good to know, tell us more, where’s your herd?” He questioned.
“I don’t have one,” she responded. “It’s been a while s-since I’ve met any other horses…”
Zafar nodded and let the mare calm down as he introduced himself and Karma, who just shifted awkwardly and let the two talk. He had never been allowed around mares, so he was very stiff and didn’t know what to say to her or how to act, but Zafar seemed to know the drill. He would occasionally chime in, but otherwise he let the older stallion do the talking. Anora seemed happy to finally find more horses to talk with, it seemed like she had, in fact, been alone for quite a while, and she didn’t seem to mind Zafar, despite his somewhat grumpy behavior and negative view of the world.
“I s-should get going though-” she soon excused herself. “I don’t wanna cause any trouble a-and I interrupted you guys' resting time,” she gave an apologetic smile to Karma. “Sorry I almost ran into you”
“U-uh no need to worry- it didn’t happen- so…” Karma stuttered nervously before ending with a simple shrug and going quiet.
Zafar was quiet for a moment before he spoke. “Wait, maybe you should stay,” he said. “Listen…this rookie needs a miracle to learn how to be a wild horse, I’ll…” he paused, “I’ll need as much help as possible,” he admitted begrudgingly. “I wouldn’t mind the help actually, lad here gets scared over his own shadow,” he said.
“H-Hey!” Karma pinned his ears back in embarrassment and anger.
“It’s true kid, don’t deny it,” Zafar rolled his eyes before looking at the mare, “so…what do you say? You reckon you'd like to join us?”
