Shikai: Dissipate Genkaku Shoujo

Release Command: Dissipate

Appearance: The shikai is a bit longer than her average sized katana. While not in use, it takes the form of a jagged sword. While in use, the silver blade dissipates into the air eventually becoming invisible. This leaves Riina with only the hilt left of her sword.

How it works:
Riina's sword is hallucinogenic. Her sword dissipates (breaks into small molecules) in the air once an opponent has been cut with the blade. The now very small molecule hallucinogens make their way into the open wound and through the opponent's blood stream until they get to the brain. Getting to the brain usually takes a minimum of sixty seconds. Once there, they begin to stimulate neurotransmitters in the auditory, visual cortex or both. This causes the person to hallucinate.

The 'hallucinogens' as I call them, are made up of different chemicals that can be classified under the category of "Dissociative Hallucinogens". This means that the hallucinations distort perceptions of sight and sound and can result in detachment from the outside environment.

Riina cannot manipulate the chemicals. She can merely get them into the victim. From there the chemicals do their work and the victim can experience any of the following symptoms; double vision, seeing threats that aren't there (ex. hollows), crawling/ burning skin.

It takes a great deal of spiritual energy to keep the link to her zanpakuto. She usually can only sustain this link for a minute and then recalls her shikai. During the attack, Riina herself can't fight because it would drain her energy causing the link to fail.

Weaknesses: Lots of air resistance can slow the process greatly, causing Riina to be defenseless longer (she only has her hilt for a zanpakuto for the first 60 seconds). People with more spiritual energy will get less effective results.
