I'm so glad! I'm frighteningly obsessed with interpreting the characters down to the last detail. I'm glad I'm not the only one. It's part of the reason I do so much Labyrinth art when I should be working on the stuff that helps pay the bills....but why when there's a Goblin King to draw?!

Exactly. This is his moment. We get a glimpse into what he feels and what he thinks. This is the scene where we really connect with him and who he is, aside from just being the Goblin King. Naturally it happens right before the scene where he is defeated and disappears...

I think it makes him all the more appealing because you begin to realize that he isn't heartless or god-like. He's just a a regular guy, his heart in a woman's hands. Its too bad Sarah screwed it up.

He really is just a man when you get right down to it. I don't think Sarah really screwed it up, I think if she accepted him at the end he would have been a little disappointed in her. In the very beginning of the movie he tells her that she's not match for her. But by the end he's realizing that she is quite a match for him and if he won in the end I think he would lose some of that respect for her. He wants her to grow up and she does. I think that's why he revists her at the end when she's partying with everyone in her room. He's proud of her and I'm sure she'll be seeing him again. That's my interpretation anyways...

I don't know if he'd really be all that disappointed, but he wouldn't appreciate her as much. Jareth strikes me as a very selfish character. I can imagine the hissy fit he'd throw if things didn't go his way. And I just can't help but picture the look on his face when she turns him down. It stops him from getting the instant gratification.

That's a really good way of putting it. In order for them to have any kind of enduring healthy relationship at all they would have to respect each other, and he just couldn't do that if he ruled her and he was her slave. He's had instant gratification his whole life I would imagine. Sarah becomes instantly more desireable due to the fact that she denies him that gratification, he'll have to keep working. That's the really beautiful thing about these two characters, each of them learns and grows through the movie. It's quite a change that the "villian" character would learn and grow as a character too, that's a pretty rare storyline if you ask me.

A lot of people don't really see the villain as changing. I don't know if they just miss it, or don't focus on it. But it adds a lot to the story line, as well.
