After one of my coworkers saw the mechanical hummingbird I painted a month or so ago, she asked if she could commission me for her own little clockwork menagerie.

This clockwork dragonfly is the first, and my goodness, was it great working on on this.

I could tinker away at it for ages more and never be satisfied, but I'm already way beyond the amount of time I meant to spend on it, and I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out.

(If you compare this one to the hummingbird you will see how much more fine detail this one has)

This is fantastic! I love the color combination and the glow to the wings, as well as the translucent body. Great detail indeed!

Thanks so much! It was a lot of fun adding additional bright colors into this piece. While creating the translucent-ness of it (and some of the reflective bits of it) definitely took a lot more time than I was expecting, I really liked that in the end result you can sort of sense the light playing through those sections.

Thanks for the compliments! I am fairly certain I spent as much, if not more time working on the transparency and reflective bits of him as I did designing and rendering him! I love that final stage where the materials start to "pop," though.

Thanks! I had a great time trying to finesse him while also trying to make sure he looked like he was crafted by the same hands that would have built the clockwork hummingbird (seen in this gallery as well). It was an incredibly fun prompt for a commission, to be sure.

I worked on him on and off for about a week and a half so I'm not sure o the precise number of hours. Probably upwards of 20+ hours due to those wings.

Thanks for the compliment! It's definitely a fun little series of critters (designing them is fun, but some of the rendering gets a bit crazy >_<).
