I'm not exactly sure if this is a sandpiper or not. It looks somewhat different than the sandpipers I'm used to seeing around here, but it acted a lot like one, running along the ground like it was leading me somewhere, and then flying about 15 feet and then landing and doing the same routine. However, the photo was taken like 40 miles from here, which means it could be a different sub-species than what I'm used to seeing.I poured through tons of photos for a couple of hours tonight and the closest resemblance I can come up with is the sandpiper
Photo was taken in Glacier National Park, at the Goat Lick, near the Eastern side of the park.

Yeah you're right, it does look like a dowitcher, but for the length of the bill.
Body shape, size and habitat also closely match the Sandpiper. And then there's the fact that it was feigning being injured like sandpipers do in order to lead predators away from their nests.
I am about 90% positive that it's a sandpiper.
