if my assumptions are right, then that cake is going at 38.6 mph (62.12 km/h) 

I feel like such a nerd. i just used my old physics equations to do this and it's still the summer. This feels criminal.

for this I assumed that the cake has fallen half a foot and traveled ten feet since the top of its arc.

I would wager more than ten feet. The angle of the cake itself suggests that it was thrown by somepony closer to our view as well as off to the right. I accept the assumption that the cake reached its zenith from 10 feet to the right. Judging by the angle that we can see of the bottom of the cake (Which I assume is a circle), I assume that it reached its zenith from about 7.5 feet in our direction. I assume that number in particular because that make the total distance it has traveled from the top of its arc a nice 12.5 ft.

Of course, you might have already considered this and our guesstimations just happen to be 2.5 ft apart.

...sadly, that just make it even faster if we continue to believe that it's only dropped half a foot. Ouch.

Why? Why am I thinking about this?

i don't know but I would agree with you if we were looking at this scene from an orthographic view instead of one with perspective like this is therefore ten feet backwards and to the right could be where i think the top of the cake's arc is within the scene. and by the same note the act of having this perspective view without more references makes it more ambiguous so neither of us can be at all certain and the artist could not have possibly cared about this when drawing the picture.

and even then i am basing this all on my (at the moment) headcannon that luna is five feet tall.

i do relate to twilight quite a lot and will go nuts if given the opportunity to go at something in the nerdiest way i can. i will seriously go and explain orbital mechanics to someone who thinks that pointing a chemical rocket at your destination will get you anywhere close to where you're going. I also have a tendency to use long words and go on impromptu lectures.

Anyway! 

I don't know if this conversation has anymore steam unless someone else has a rebuttal to my guestimation logic. I am also almost inexplicably starting to feel disappointed in myself. Maybe it's because I failed to escape the impromptu lecturing.
