Description
in 1979, Philippine Navy are transitioning from Gun armed fleet, to missile capable force, having the fleet of only 2 Missile Frigate, Philippine Navy requested for 9 Multi-Mission Missile Boat, Philippine Government approve this request and directly talk to the US Defense department, under the EDA or Excess Defense Article, Philippine Navy are set to receive 3 Missile boat from US, it is provided by the United States Navy, Philippine receive it's 3 Missile boat in 1983, Philippine Navy are set to acquire another 6 Vessel in 1984, But because of the political climate in the country, it was delayed, and after 3 years, it was cancelled in effort by the new government to prioritize its defensive posture program.
to cover this loss, Philippine Government funded the acquisition of the Coastal Patrol and Interdiction Craft, Philippines shipbuilding company, Cavite Naval Shipyard, collaborate with Japanese Company to build vessel, after a long time of research, Japan agreed to give permission to the Philippines to copy the Tirad Pass Class SARS of the PCG, which is build by the Japan in 1974.
The design resulted to the creation of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo Class, it is equip with (2) Bofors gun, (2) 20mm Gun
and (2) 50 .cal gun, it is also said to be FFBNW Penguin Missile, Two(2) Vessel are commissioned in 1990, they are named as, BRP Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo PG-140 and BRP Gen. Antonio Luna PG-141.
Philippine Navy intended to acquire 4 More unit's in 1994, but after the Arrival of Tomas Batilo Class in 1995, they abandoned the project and proceed to acquire additional Tomas Batilo until 2008, Aguinaldo class are used as a coastal defensive craft, used as a fire support in near shore combat, they showed a average performance in service, make them usable in navy's operation needs, they supplemented the four(4) Kagitingan Class in northern luzon, to implement it's maritime law with Taiwan, in 2008, they are upgraded, replaced with newer engine to make it more capable in todays warfare, in 2018, they are decommissioned in service, and transferred to reserve command, and being refurbished and to be put on mothballed, alongside with a few (2)miguel malvar class, (3)tomas batilo and (1)Kagitingan class.
