Description Hey there,

Here's the first of my proposed two tutorials. This one is a little sloppy and entirely too wordy (minus a section or two).

But it's detailed. I'm hoping that you are willing to read. If you are, you will learn how to do this stuff.

Please let me know how it is and if it helps you. Make some suggestions, and maybe even teach me something!

I hope it helps, I really do.

The vector tutorial is soon to come, and I promise it wont be as wordy. Trust me, if you get through this one, the next one will need practically no explaining, and you'll be working in Illustrator like a pro!

Later, guys.

Oh, and a full view is not recomended, it's mandatory. Otherwise, you wont be able to read it.

^^ Love this. Concepts are probably my favorite parts of drawing and coming up with characters. It's nice to see a tutorial focusing on it.

Thanks! I should really do an updated one when I get the chance, honestly. My process has changed so much!

Its a good tutorial, but thing I fail to understand is how you create the lineart. You dont explain the process on how you made the lines very smooth when drawing over a sketch. Even though I'm using a WACOM tablet, I try going over sketches with a paintbrush: I try to be as smooth as possible, even using the Marquee tool. But it just doesnt produce the same professional quality like yours I even try using the pen tool, but when I first attempt to trace over the lines, there is always a solid colour filling the void between one point to another. Please, I am literally on my knees begging you to teach me how you produced the quality lineart, like most artists

I see your problem and I totally understand, but my answer is probably not going to be what you want to hear.

Ultimately, I can tell you about the tools and the process, but I can't teach you how to draw. You'll have to keep trying, with trial-and-error, and figure out what works for you. I guess if I could give solid advice it would be these things:

-If you draw on a smaller digital canvas, it's easier to get smoother lines (but then the art is smaller and that decreases usability, but that's not a huge deal with concept art).
-If you draw on a larger digital canvas, things might get shaky, but it's pretty hard to tell when you decrease the size to post on the internet.
-If you use your brush and your eraser in unison, you'll be able to carve out some of those nice, smooth, crisp lines. So don't forget that.

Other than that...it really isn't a science. Just keep trying new things (and new brushes).

thanks alot. I tried giving that pen tool another whack, but this time I was able to cancel the solid color fill by switching it to PathS icon. Haha, I feel abit noobish for finally realising this. Thank you so much anyway, now I have a direction I can follow.

Hey, baby steps are still steps! It's good that you're clicking around and learning things on your own, that's the best way to figure a program out.

The font is small, yes, but I had a lot to say, haha.

You'd be better off reading my other tutorial that basically covers the same stuff but does it better: [link]

And the font is bigger. ;D

I love your color palettes!

DrewGreen In reply to sygnin [2007-10-06 18:21:05 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I find it to be a pretty useful way of keeping track of colors. Plus, if I change a color on one layer using hue/saturation (which I often do), it'll change the color on the palette, too, releasing me from a lot o hassle.

Excellent tutorial. It's obvious that a lot of time went into this, and it seems like you covered all the bases. I didn't see it anywhere but maybe I just overlooked it. When you were explaining shortcuts, holding Alt while in brush mode brings up the eyedropper tool. Alt can be a lot more convenient than 'i', 'b', 'i', etc. (This works in PS7, not sure about CS, etc.)

Also, kudos for mentioning character ethnicity. It's something a lot of artists ignore. (Especially the anime set.) It's also (like you said) something that makes an artists work really stand out. There's an excellent set of 'tutorial' things by cedarseed that details every kind of 'human type' you can imagine.

DrewGreen In reply to ConcludoLusio [2007-07-11 14:08:36 +0000 UTC]

Wow, thanks! I'm glad that you enjoyed it.

Yeah, it isn't until now that I realized I didn't put the "alt while using brush" trick, but that's probably because I seldom use it. I should use it (and I'll make a conscious effort to do so), I'm just not used to it, that's all. Thanks for pointing that out!

I've actually seen the Cedarseed tutorials about the human types. They're really fantastic, and really detailed! I just thought that it was noteworthy to remind artists that not every human being looks the same, despite what they may see in many anime cartoons nowadays.

I learned quite a bit like using texture in your brush; the filter> sharpen option; and not to mention all the shortcuts you've mentioned. I usually do my sketch on paper and just you showing how you do it all on the computer makes me say: "Hhmmm... I think I'll try that." Great tutorial! Thanks!

TMcLeod [2007-06-17 04:17:04 +0000 UTC]

great tutorial. I had always thought that there was some strange rule against duplicating. Maybe I felt like I was cheating but this is so much better.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DrewGreen In reply to TMcLeod [2007-06-17 04:42:36 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

Duplicating is a great method of preservation. If you want to keep your lineart, but for some reason wish to merge your lineart with your colors, you can duplicate the lineart and merge the original with the colors. Everyone's happy in the end.

Nice! And the day I get CS I will track this tutorial down and use it. 8D It was pretty easy to follow; you explained thangers well. And I like the way your colors work.

On a side note, Luc's expression to the far right is pretty cute.
