Description Hey folks!

I had a bit of commission down time and I needed to clear my thoughts of some really awful family drama going on right now, so I tackled another word on the "100 Word Challenge" list. This image represents number 37, "Eyes."

Although it has little to do with eyes at all, I set out sketching the picture with eyes in mind. So it will be "Eyes." There's no convincing me otherwise. XD

I realize she looks like some crazy evil person, and with the spikes and long, scary fingernails and bloodshot eyes (hey, eyes!), I figured I'd call her the Queen of Pain. She looks like she'd bring a whole world of pain if you angered her, so it seemed fitting.

I forgot to put my "100" logo on this one. I'll have to do so next time I'm in Illustrator.

It's a simple one, but I hope you guys can appreciate it, no less. Enjoy!

Adobe Illustrator CS, about 1.5 hours total (including the Photoshop sketch).

Image (c) me, Andrew T. Green. Please don't steal or else the Queen of Pain will bring a whole world of pain on you!...sounds like something a professional wrestler would say...

EDIT: Added the 100 logo and also fixed a boob issue. Yes, a boob issue.

Those eyes look like they be painful (guess why she is the Queen of Pain). Works great for the theme of "eyes".

I like the pattern you added in to the bottom of her hair.

Thanks! It's a pattern that I've actually used before but I just couldn't help but use it again.

Really strong sense of design here- great shapes on the character! The expression is great; it's hard to place. Confusion or blushing embarassment or something very sinister

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DrewGreen In reply to Buuya [2008-12-12 23:12:14 +0000 UTC]

I think the eyes make the expression difficult to pin, but I believe it adds a lot to the image. Is the the queen of pain because she intends to cause pain to others, or is she the queen of pain because she is forever in pain? Questions questions, perhaps we will never know the answers. ;D

Glad you like it!

I quite like the "waves" in her hair - sort of Beardsleyesque in a way.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DrewGreen In reply to Audley [2008-12-07 19:41:33 +0000 UTC]

What do you mean by the waves? Are you referring to the pattern or the way her hair flows?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Audley In reply to DrewGreen [2008-12-07 19:45:00 +0000 UTC]

The pattern. You can see I am not really an art person - everything looks like a wave to me. Look at the wave in that Godzilla's tail! Look at the wave of that person's beak! And so on (;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DrewGreen In reply to Audley [2008-12-07 19:47:39 +0000 UTC]

Haha, fair enough. "Wave" is a pretty all-inclusive word, I suppose.

Hey wow, I've been dealing with some family shit too!

Anyway I like this piece, she looks like she's been on a cocaine binge for about a week.

DrewGreen In reply to BurningStarIV [2008-12-07 18:54:33 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha, that comment had me laughing out loud. XD Glad you like it.

And I hope your family drama clears up (mine is still prevalent).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BurningStarIV In reply to DrewGreen [2008-12-08 14:54:08 +0000 UTC]

haha I'm so glad but that's just the first thing I thought when I saw her! I'm glad it didn't offend you lol.

Anywho, no my family dramas are still very prevalent as well, in fact they got a bit worse last night and turned into in-law drama as well. yay life! haha. If you need anyone to talk to though, you know I'm hear for you!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DrewGreen In reply to BurningStarIV [2008-12-12 23:36:47 +0000 UTC]

Eek, in-laws. It's bad enough when it's drama within the family, but when the distant family decides to throw a few punches, it gets worse.

Things have gotten better on the outside here, but it's almost cosmetic. I had originally planned on spending Christmas day at my grandparents (you know, the default option), but since the whole dramatic thing, I'm not going to be doing that this year. My step mom and my dad will be out of town, and I kind of just want to spend Christmas alone this year. I'm really fed up with everyone and everything right now.

And likewise, if you need to talk about it, just send me a note. I'm here to support you if you need it. ;D

BurningStarIV In reply to DrewGreen [2008-12-15 19:48:41 +0000 UTC]

omg you're spending Christmas alone?! That's terrible. Come here and spend it with me and my family!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DrewGreen In reply to BurningStarIV [2008-12-18 06:55:04 +0000 UTC]

While I really really appreciate the offer (you're so sweet!), I will be staying here. It turns out that after much kicking and screaming from me, my siblings are still going to stop by on Christmas day, so I won't be spending it entirely alone much to my disappointment (the loneliness was my choice, since I look forward to having time to clear my head and most of my family still has me really bitter right now).

BurningStarIV In reply to DrewGreen [2008-12-18 17:29:25 +0000 UTC]

Aw, well I hope that it goes somewhat well for you. I'm not happy for the holidays at all, either. I can really relate to your annoyances. For me, it seems like they'll ease off and then come back full-force x2 a few days later *sigh* We'll get through it though!

But seriously, the offer was 100% honest and if you ever want to come visit my door is always open and I even have a spare bedroom for ya! I know travelling is expensive (I really learned that after making my travel arrangements for Anthony's graduation) though but I'd try to help as much as I could!

Ooh she's so nifty looking!! :3 I happen to enjoy spikes and evilness, so she can totally be both. XD;; I like how even though she's got those spikes and looks kind of evil, you put her in pink. It really makes a neat image that way.

DrewGreen In reply to RennaRevelin [2008-12-07 18:55:14 +0000 UTC]

DrewGreen In reply to sthelning [2008-12-07 09:59:15 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, thanks! It took a lot of time and effort to learn Illustrator, and I feel I use it to great effect. I also take pride in the fact that I generally use it for things besides realistic portraits of celebrities (not that there aren't some talented realism-focused vector artists here on DA, but you get my point).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sthelning In reply to DrewGreen [2008-12-08 22:39:56 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I do. Yours are a lot more interesting in my opinion. Also I guess the fact that you're really actually illustrating using Illustrator is a plus. Haven't seen many people that do that. I guess it must give you warm fuzzies knowing that you could make your artwork into billboards at a whim if you so desired.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DrewGreen In reply to sthelning [2008-12-09 22:52:54 +0000 UTC]

One of my absolute favorite things about Illustrator is the pure security there is in knowing that I can infinitely resize my stuff (even though I rarely need to do so to a dramatic degree). It's wonderful! It almost feels like a piece's lifespan has been lengthened, you know?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sthelning In reply to DrewGreen [2008-12-18 21:57:39 +0000 UTC]

If not its lifespan, at least its versatility. Or perhaps it being more versatile inherently increases its lifespan? Heavy...

DrewGreen In reply to sthelning [2008-12-19 22:37:57 +0000 UTC]

I'd have to agree with your second thought. ;D
