Description The presence of weak dawn sunlight from the top of Cathedral Rock as the full moon set in the west over the township of Armidale. The duration of the twilight period between dawn and sunrise varies greatly depending on the latitude, so from this latitude I furnished with this gorgeous light which gave me plenty of time to scope out a composition before the sunrise light burst into the sky!

Note: The moon is a composite at 70mm and the landscape at 17mm. Shooting landscapes with the moon in frame is tricky because the moon only looks like a tiny spec in the sky, so compositing a shot at 70mm I was able to capture a more accurate scale of the moon with the landscape. I'm thinking of making the moon slightly smaller though, probably a 50mm composite instead of 70mm.

Yes, I noticed that something is amiss with the moon: that low on the horizon it should be more orange, because of all the atmosphere. Also, it seems to stand out too much, its edges are unnaturally sharp. But I love the Venus' Belt in the sky, really nice capture of colors there.

I like it, and agree, the moon looks slightly too large, but still looks fantastic

I'm interested--how pray tell do you get the moon smaller or larger as you've said by cropping the photo or what--coming from a learner ---still

Sweet indeed! Nice catch. 70mm on full frame. 50mm on crop sensors. Not sure what cam you're on but could be believable. Nice blend

I love the sky in this. The moon with the nice detail really completes the scene. I'm loving this series Drew.

and now I see your comment below. You should probably state that in the description

The way you've brought the detail back in the moon is not good. I would do it in a much more subtle way if you want it to look realistic at all. Otherwise this is lovely.

No the moon was always there. This is a composite at 70mm for the moon, that is what our eyes see but through a wide angle it looks like a spec in the distance

Great stuff Drew! I love the way you've balanced the moon against the light of the dawn so it's not just a blown out white disc in the sky.

What's the fringe around the rock though? Is that just because of the reduction in quality from uploading on the net?
