this is excellent. in more ways than one i feel that this is the direction i would like my work to go. it is so well crafted... jesus man.

... do you sell them?

thank you, the growth chamber was the first time i really machined aluminum, it just takes time and patience. haven't sold the chamber but the manatee fetuses are $25

I would like to say something more than "Fuckin' rad" but more eloquent speach simply eludes me. This piece just astounds me.

please tell me this is a lamp or a hat. i could handle that. this is good. weird and good. nice and sleek and cold just like science. i really want to have an ET moment where i can plug it in and the fetus glows. its not a manatee is it?

DrFetus In reply to 925-STUDIO [2005-01-13 05:18:58 +0000 UTC]

it is a manatee! i had plans to incorporate a lighting element, thats why i wanted to make the fetus out of a translucent silicone. the machining took so long that i ran out of time to add a light before the crit. someday i'll go back and finish it

no fair, you live in florida, where the manatees roam free! none the less you win a smile, and by the way the jelly beans are in my stomach

The main body is interesting enough, but I think the addition of the smaller tubes really pulls out the intricacy of the design.

Additionally, I had no idea people could lathe metal. Jeebus.

(Is there any way you would consider doing something along this line with the roots of plants in it; perhaps a hydroponically-adjustable living model? It was just my imagination, but in the thumbnail version I thought I saw roots in the smaller tubes, and I was a small part disappointed when I found out they were empty, save the fluid.)

Kick-ass!

thanks, i may never do anything like this again. it was fun but i spent at least 150 hours machining this thing. it was pretty tricky to get everything made precisely enough to be fit together in a believable way.

I like this... It looks like something I'd make if I had the tools, resources, and skill... Great job ^_^

nice...did you mill everything yourself?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DrFetus In reply to bluntobjectrauma [2004-12-25 10:15:24 +0000 UTC]

thanks, most of it was done on the lathe, but i did use the mill to cut the slots on the chemical tubes. it took many, many, many hours but i made it all myself (except for the glass) all the way down to the knurled knobs on the top of the chemical tubes.
