the preportions are a bit off, i find sketch-up a hard program to use for guns ( than agian sketchup is the only one of used ) nice work.

Wow guyz you're g@y. Its a great design. Im pretty sure the artist isn't building for the army development co. so the fact that its 'odd to carry' is umiportant....god...seriously...psh

Doomsday-Device [2007-10-28 03:12:38 +0000 UTC]
I'm a bit confused about the design and intent of this weapon. It's said that this is a plasma weapon, but what part of this design uses plasma? Are you firing weaponized plasma? Is plasma just a power source? Does plasma perform some sort of subsidiary function that is not obvious?
And why it there a holographic cross-hair being projected on the end of the rails if it already has a scope and data jack for cyborgs?
Based on the looks of this, it appears as if you've designed a rail gun. Doubly so from the dual protrusions and the breach in the nose of the stock. If that's the case, is the "plasma" part referring to the power source that fires the pullet?
And if it is firing rounds that require no cases to contain propellant, is that handle thing on the right side of the stock not a slide? And the same question applies to the ejector port on the left. No propellant=no spent casings.

DrFrag In reply to Doomsday-Device [2007-10-28 03:27:59 +0000 UTC]
you may be over analizing this fictional weapon. but if you must know, it fires a focused beam of plasma. it power source are in the magizne which holds multiple energy cells that power each shot and are ejected out the side (1 cell per fire part of it's power goes to ejecting it) and ass for no trigger guard it's made a designed for robot use, in which case the robots do not misfire, ever. they may miss, but not misfire. oh and the holo sight, it's mostly just for looks

Doomsday-Device In reply to DrFrag [2007-10-28 03:46:26 +0000 UTC]
Okay. But one question that this explanation raises is "Why would a robot need to use a rifle?".
If a robot is going to go into a fight/war, why not just attach the weapon directly to the robot? It's not as if a there is any sort of tactical advantage to having a loose weapon for a robot to have to encumber an appendage that could be used in other ways.
Sorry, but in other replies you mentioned that this was designed for use in a story about robotic uprising. And I also saw other replies that stated you were trying to design this weapon with as much realistic possibility and purpose as possible.

it make for better action stories. and yes it's for Robotic uprising. but keep in mind i don't professional make guns

Doomsday-Device In reply to DrFrag [2007-10-28 04:03:38 +0000 UTC]
How does it improve the action? It challenges the writer to make a gunfight more than just that. And even if you don't design guns as a profession, you can still do research. I mean, research and believability through common sense is the dividing line between Science Fiction and Fantasy.
Are you writing a Fantasy story? From what it sounds like, you're not trying to. So if you want to call is Science fiction, you need to use some science. Not just something made-up that "Works because you say it does". That is the reason that Peter Pan can fly, but not the reason that a C-140 cargo jet can.
I apologize for the aggression, but it's crap like that that is ruining the genre of Science Fiction. Science is the pursuit of knowledge and the gateway to humanity's future. Don't just say the gun can fire energy (which is practically impossible, if not terribly inefficient) because you can.

DrFrag In reply to Doomsday-Device [2007-10-28 05:42:14 +0000 UTC]
that's why it's science fiction. because we can't make these things yet. which it why it doesn't make sense now, maybe in the future it will though

Doomsday-Device In reply to DrFrag [2007-10-28 06:09:04 +0000 UTC]
The only type of energy that can be weaponized, as a straight beam, is light. Physics says so. Electricity cannot be used as a targeted weapon because of it's tendency to travel to a negatively charged, ferrous, material. If you're using high-energy plasma, the effectiveness of the weapon becomes severely limited and is only going to be usable in short ranges before the energy loss reduces the projectile to nothing more than room-temperature matter. Really, unless that rifle has some sort of cyclotronic resonance device that can be used to target an object, there is practically no way to make that gun do what you want it to do.
Just because we don't have the means to make something, doesn't mean that we don't know what is necessary to make something work.

anti-gravity is not physicaly possible but that's used in sci-fi all the time. they way they get that is through their creativity in their mind when they write. the second half of science fiction, is fiction which means it's not real. I'm just trying to make it believable to the readers. i guess saying realistic was a mis-wording.
thank you for the critique i appreciate it very much, I've taken it on bored but lets move on

Doomsday-Device In reply to DrFrag [2007-10-28 07:08:22 +0000 UTC]
Actually, anti-gravity is possible. Just look up "superconductors" or magnetic levitation. The only problem is that it costs a lot to produce such materials and requires a lot of energy to create the correct environment. This video explains is perfectly:[link]

That is only an example of science denying faith. The cell phone is not a mistake, either. And science fiction writers (the good ones) have been the heralds of invention many times over. My only concern is in preventing people from looking ignorant. The facts are freely available. And unless somebody starts experimenting with parallel dimensions and inventing zero-point energy or overunity, physical laws are going to be the same now as in the future. The trick is using facts to determine possibility.

well the plasma is barely affected by gravity so, it can go quite a ways, i guess it all depends on how far you can see. and as to it's power, it can melt through 6 inches of steel from one mile away

but i don't see the point to adding a trigger guard since it's already heavy enough, and as for the scope, it probably could be a little higher, but there is a cyber jack for robots and cyborgs so i don't feel a super urge to change it
