I'm not sure how accurate the movie is, so this is how the story goes according to the book (spoilers). Mondego does get Mercedes after Edmund is landed in prison, and even has a son with her (Albert). He eventually kills himself after Dantes ruins his title and reputation, his son and wife abandon him and he finally finds out who Monte Cristo is (Dantes). He did betray a country he'd pledged allegiance to for money and sell Haydee into slavery, so he's not all that cute really.
Interesting point: He's also Mercedes' cousin (as someone below me mentioned). In those times it was perfectly acceptable for cousins to marry eachother, though I'm pretty sure siblings wasn't. Both of them are also from a Catalan village where that was not only acceptable but expected. It all makes sense in the book.

He married Mercedes in the movie and they had a son in the movie, too.^^
But I don't think he killed himself x: (poor Mondego)
Thanks for sharing this x3

Another interesting difference between the two is that Villefort was never in the plot to frame Dantes. He came in as a result of the exact specifications of the frame, which happened to involve his father, who was a Bonapartist. He was originally going to set Dantes free (he knew he was innocent) but didn't to preserve his own career, which may have been in jeopardy if he'd let Dantes go. Caderousse was the original third member of the party- he was friendly with Dantes and originally had been too drunk to notice what was going on between Mondego and Danglars. When he finally did realise he didn't speak up because he feared it would mark him as an accomplice of Dantes and land him in prison too. In the musical they cut out a few characters, one of whom was Caderousse, who was replaced by Villefort for the sake of simplicity.

I'm pretty sure the movie and the musical are actually not as accurate/true to the book. Not to say that it doesn't have the great story! It merely changed the romance in the plot. If I remember correctly, Mercedes and Dantes never got back together in the book (right?)
In the musical and the movie, they do.
At least, that's what I remember.

No, they never do. Because of a series of events that would be a bit too tedious to repeat here both Albert and Mercedes had to leave their home and fortune behind and return to where Dantes first lived. Though Dantes gives her 3000 francs (which he'd buried with the intention of giving it to her on their wedding before he was imprisoned) they never really tried to get back together.

Uh...I dunno...screwing over your best bud, dooming him to 13 years in what was essentially a cold stone box and stealing his girl is /pretty/ jacked...just sayin...evil-ish, if not downright malicious.

Apparently Mondego (the character Twilight plays) is supposed to be Mercede's (Fluttershy) COUSIN. So that's even more disturbing.
