Description So, I got a new puppy about a month ago, a little male called Piker. Pikers are Irish gypsies with a reputation to steal, fight, and trick. My guy is well-named, because he can't stay out of trouble for very long. He's a smart little fella; he's very attentive and too curious for his own good. Pike spent the first 7 weeks of his life outside in the Texas heat, so he thinks air conditioning is some kind of miracle. I've never seen a dog that hated the heat so much. When we walk he stops to sit in the shade. My new house has floor vents, and Pike lays on top of them to take a nap.
Somewhat uncanny intelligence for something that's been alive for 10 weeks. I've surprised myself with how much I'm starting to adore him, despite the fact that I've equally wanted to strangle him for ruining a screen, a cell phone charger, and a couple of blinds. I'm hardly an inattentive dog owner, but Pike sure makes me feel that way. His da is a guard dog at a body shop who weighs 128. What a legacy!

Actually, Pike has a larger legacy to inherent: Dexter's. Dex is my 12 year old Rottweiler, although he's more my mom's than mine. When we were younger we belonged to each other. Dexter is the best dog I’ve ever known, the kind of dog that inspired Jack London, Fred Gipson, and Alfred Peyson Terhune to write. Loyal, attentive, comforting, and protective. It’s gotten kind of painful to watch my hero start to limp and struggle to move past the arthritis in the morning, but I suppose that’s the greatest lesson that dogs teach us. Life is short, love it while you can. Dexter has been very tolerant of little Piker. Dexter has come to stay with me for a little while; one last job for my guardian.

Dexter really was my best friend when I was younger; once I hit puberty all my human friends just kind of grew in different directions. I lost my best friend in 7th grade or so, and didn’t get a new one until my junior year of high school. So Dex filled the niche in the meantime. I don’t mean to sound like a complete loser (although I probably was), or sickly sweet sentimental (although I probably am). When I got my back surgery my freshman year of high school, I had to rehabilitate. I couldn’t even lift my arm to throw a ball, but Dexter didn’t mind. I’d like flick my wrist and drop the ball, and Dex acted like I’d thrown it a football field. He’d come zooming back like “Way to GO, champ! Give it another go, please, please, please!”

My pets have always inspired me, and I think I drew Dexter more than anything, except maybe horses. He starred as himself in a comic strip I did about toys coming to life. Dexter also seeped into the closest thing I’ve ever had to a ‘fursona’, that of Garrick. I roleplayed Garrick all the time and drew him way too much (he’s the psychotic looking rottweiler drawings.) A lot of people have that hero animal character that, if they had their way, would rip out the throat of bullies and fawn over their creator before crowds of impressed and terrified high-schoolers. Garrick was that for me. His legacy lives on in my email handle. But Garrick was basically an extension of Dexter. The same goes for Cerastes, Vindex, and yes, even Strongheart the Rottweiler Carebear Cousin.

I don’t think it’s a shameful thing at all to say that the best person you’ve ever known was a dog. It says a lot about humanity, not so much the individual. Piker is doing things that Dexter used to do, like lying with his hind legs played out behind him and tapping the cats with his forepaws. Things Dex grew out of and I forgot. It’s been a delight to rediscover them, and rediscover what it means to have another Rottweiler. So here’s to the torch being passed. Here’s to another generation of loyalty and friendship. Here’s to tradition.

Go hug your pet!

What a beautiful passage to go with the visual. It is quite sad to see your dearest friend start to slow down and eventually cease to live. If I could, I would wish for them to live for at least our life span. Your story reminds me of how much I feel for my 'little' (ok, so he got rather large... in a rather short period of time.. he's far from little, but he'll always be my 'lil dude'..) rottie-munch ~MooseMoose-Rottie . Even if he is a mixture of Rott and two other dogs, he doesn't seem to mentally pick up on much (except for the labrador trait of having to eat every single thing in sight, whether or not it's edible doesn't matter to him...) other than a rottie-mind.

Moose has his moments where he's bold and thinks he's a 'badass', but for most of his life, he's a lump. He enjoys prancing around, flopping on the bed, you name it. The one thing I'd like him to stop doing is (besides eating everything in sight) is to please stop terrorizing the poor cat @_@ He never hurts the cat, just chases poor Nino all around until Nino goes where Moose can't fit. I suppose he gets his just dues, though... Nino will come out spatting and with claws slashing, so I can't say he's so "poor" after all XD

That dog by far (even already at 9 months old) has been the biggest, but the best dog I have ever seen, met, and owned. He is my boy and I couldn't imagine life without him. I will just have to find myself another similar to him when he goes- either a rottie/lab, rottie/newfie, or just a straight old rottweiler (I do like them larger though... rotts are 'generally' not past 100 pounds... my little man has just passed the 160 pound benchmark and he's STILL growing *this is what happens when you over-feed a rottie... pure breed or mix does not matter... over fed = grow grow grow; but that's alright with us XD* I just wonder some days when he'll stop. Standing on two legs, he's already as tall as me at 5'8-5'9 and can take up the entire full size bed to himself *he even has his own mattress because he's just that big*)

Thank you for taking the time to post this <3 Both the image and the description.

Thats very true, it makes me dread when my dog will get old. But I have another ten years, I hope. She is a two year old dachshund, I cant see her most the time since she is with my dad in our divorced family. I wont start my whole history with her, its not the place for it exactly. xD

I hope Dex is very memorable for you and that he lives long.

My animals are my children. <3

I have three ferrets, four ratty girls, a king rotty, an american rotty, a doberman and two mutts.

My king rotty thinks everything and anything is a chew toy, including car tires. No matter how much he chews things, though, I can't begin to recount the times he's saved my ass from getting mugged and such. He's my big guardian/nearly 150 pound lap dog.

I felt the same about my old cat... she was my everything when I was little

and now she's gone, I found my guardian in a new being: my black shepherd Devil. I got him when he was 10 weeks, and I can't imagine an animal being more loyal to me then he is. (he belongs to my mom and brother too, but I learned him everything he knows, and I take him almost everywhere)

He's indeed my big, protective guardian but my big, cuddly teddybear too

He has his crazy sides and a untameable spirit, but I'm just as crazy sometimesXD

when I'm typing this, he lays on the floor next to me. he looks so small and humble when he's sleeping^^

The more people I meet, the more I like my pets.

This was on a t-shirt my aunty Grace gave me *except instead of pets, it said horse* But I always kind of related to it. Some people I meet, I like and are genuinly wonderfull people, but the majority are so awefull that words cannot describe.

My hero when i was younger was Monro. No lovely guardian like your handsome dexter there, but she was one of my most treasured friends, and it damn near killed me when she had to put down. She was a little blonde american Cocker spaniel. We got her from a breeder who was going to kill her because she was a runt and not show quality so no one wanted her. She looked at me with those lovely brown eyes and started chewing my pant leg and I fell in love. She lived a good 12 years. Our next cocker spaniel will be living my Babaroo's legacy, like pike and dexter.

Lol and enough rambling from me. Pike looks absolutely handsome, and definately looks like a trouble maker!!! Congrats..and of course..lol good luck with your furniture!

The shutters on the front of my house are so chewed, it's like a sign that says "BIG DOG LIVES HERE."
I'm glad you had a hero in Monro. Everyone deserves one.

Ooh if thats what chewed Shutters means, then my 4 Cats can substitute for a large dog

Lol. Two of my cats have decided that our blinds are a plastic delicacy.

Awww, that's so sweet... *hugs teh Pikers* Though I think I might be the only person in the entire world that has a dog (a terrier mix, of all things) that has the mind of a cat rather than a dog.

Droemar In reply to TheRootOfAllEvil [2007-07-06 16:54:24 +0000 UTC]

I can believe it. Terriers are supposed to be pretty aloof, independent sorts, good for people who aren't around much. Refreshing change from the clingy "Love me!" breeds.

I have 2 cats, too. And therefore a constant stream of criticism and purring. I say cats are good for the artist's muse, but dogs make for better conversation.

This makes me miss my first dog and my first few cats.
My cat now is one of my best friends and loves me more than anything in the world. When being with my ex-boyfriend I told him he had competition for my love with my cat. He didn't believe me till he met my cat. I know at the end of each day I know I have my cat.
The same with my dog but sometimes she is to ADHD to even relies me but she knows when I am sad.

I have one question since you have rottweilers do they chew and clean their nails? My dog is a rotti mix and she does that.

My good buddy was my kitty, Norman. He always followed me around the house anytime I left my room. It was very hard for me when he got sick and died. After that I didn't pay too much attention to my other two cats, but I remembered that I need to. You are right. Pets really are the best companians you can have.

anyways, I would leave more but I have to go feed my cats.

Oh, he's so adorable all splayed out on the floor! You've really given him a creative, good name. It really is amazing what truly good friends dogs are. Mine treats every person differently because she knows how to deal properly with each one. Rough with me and gentle as a lamb with my granddad. They aren't distracted like people are, so I think they are able to be more in tune to our feelings and needs. I can relate to how you feel about Dexter; I'm starting to see the age in my dog, too. Piker will definitely bring you happiness, too. For now, make sure the two of them get all the hugs they can stand.

Oh, and I love the character in the dog you've drawn. Very good!
