Description Exactly what it says on the tin.

This is actually a request from Arosenheim : How about an image of the Doctor using his sonic screwdriver on the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Vader, and depicting that his lightsaber won't light up. (Perhaps like an motion similar to you and I tapping a flashlight with the palm of our hands when it won't light.)

Here are pictures of myself I used as references (and please don't laugh! ) : [link]

Note: the two female Togrutas in the background are just random characters.

I just got to say first: WOW. I first saw this on facebook's Derpy Who page and I freaked out. I thought this was the most amazing thing since Batman fighting Jaws with the lightsaber, which is a great picture by the way. I really love this picture just because I've never seen anything like it before, and also just because of the sheer artistic FANTASTIC-ness of this piece. This almost looks like an actual still from a movie (which would probably make me explode just on hearing about it) and just the pose that The Doctor is in makes me fan girl so much. I love this piece and am VERY jealous of your artistic ability.

Hello,

Thank you very much for your enthusiastic critique, but to be perfectly fair, I don't deserve the maximum rating everywhere. You should at least decrease the technique rating, since I didn't manage to obtain a homogeneous result all over the image. Some parts still look too obviously taken from picture references.

I don't care I use picture references all the time. You deserve a five star Don't doubt yourself!

This. Is. Amazing. You've taken two of my favorite things, Doctor Who and Star Wars, and combined them into one amazing work of art. I love how the Vader half of the picture is dark and foggy, while the Doctor's is light and has him guarding the two Togrutas. Perfect representation of dark vs. light, good vs. evil. The Doctor's hand is a little awkwardly posed, but I love how it looks like he's sonicing Vader's lightsaber, which is being deactivated. The emotion of surprise on Vader through his hand is wonderful, since you can't use facial expressions. I really hope those two Togrutas got out safely!

Thank you very much for taking time to write a critique, Watergirl! I'm glad you noticed the separation between the two parts of the picture : blue and dark for Vader, bright and yellow for the Doctor.

By the way, several people told me they didn't like the Doctor's hand, so I've just changed it. What do you think?

I do like your style, very detailed - although the doctor does seem a little out of place. The shading of his hair is an odd job - To be specific: The light is behind him and hardly above him while it isn't close enough to give that kind of gloss and shine so tone down a little with the parting at the back of his head.

The left side of his face is a little bright too, surely his hair would overshadow some places but the clothing, I have no critique with.

Vader's left hand looks a bit squiff. It's a little on the skinny side and work on the shading of the light for the hand. The perspective can fool you a little, although its a good job, the thumb of the far hand could be further outstretched while the four fingers perhaps closer together as this is how you'd smack something against your hand as if it weren't working.

Otherwise, A job well done Very good

Ah yes and as a side note - The detail of the two behind the doctor doesn't quite add up to the detail put into the doctor. It's almost as though the doctor's face is from another picture entirely. And try to add as much detail as you have with all other areas - try not to get lazy and the results will be immaculate

Hello Maizashinkaze. Thank you very much for this detailed critique. However, since my English is not that good, I would need some clarifications if you don't mind!

What's the meaning of "squiff"? Do you think Vader's left hand is too thin? And when you say "The detail of the two behind the doctor doesn't quite add up to the detail put into the doctor." Which part do you think should I put detail into: the two, or the doctor? In general, which area should be more detailed according to you?

Oherwise, thank you again!

Maizashinkaze In reply to Drombyb [2012-05-15 20:26:09 +0000 UTC]

Squiff being a slang word meaning a little bit off or odd

Yes - more to the point, I believe his left 'palm'* seems just a little bit on the small side i.e. Where his wrist joins to his hand, there is a small misjudgement of how thin the wrist connecting to the hand is and thus, the slightly small hand. It's one of those small annoying features that's hard to put right.

The doctor has forehead wrinkles and his cheekbones are apparent not to mention his wonderfully coloured skin complexion. You can see the fault lines in his skin like on his neck for example but you can't see that on the Togrutas. So I think that more detail into the skin and facial features of the Togrutas. like the facial features seem a little like they have been airbrushed if you know where I'm coming from? But this really is an excellent piece of art and I look forward to seeing your progress

I think Maizashinkaze meant "stiff", not "squiff". But if s/he meant "squiff" I don't know what s/he's trying to say, either!

Darth Vader: Doctor huh. Well it's too late heal me!

Doctor: I'm not 'A' Doctor. I'm 'The' Doctor.

Darth Vader: So you're from Gallifray, Obi Wan. Or were you adapted from Gallifray and live on stewjon for the rest of your life?

Doctor: I'M NOT OBI WAN!!!!!

This is a brilliant piece. Your use of light shows the characters in their natural state perfectly - the Doctor cornered in the last ray of light, standing defiantly in front of two cowering figures, and Darth Vader striding forward through the shadow with actual mist curling around his ankles as if he's in a horror movie. The fact that Darth Vader is significantly taller than the Doctor adds to the feeling of desperation.

I kinda feel duty-bound, as a massive Doctor Who fan, to correct some myths about who would win. First of all, Time Lords are not immune to strangulation. They have a "respiratory bypass" that allows them to take in oxygen without breathing. Having one's neck crushed is an entirely different matter. Also, a big part of Eleven's character arc is that he's old, weakened, and inexorably nearing death. He's on his last regeneration, running out of both energy and clever tricks. I highly doubt that the Doctor will die here, but that's only because his appearance on either Lake Silencio or Trenzalore (depending on where he is in the timeline) is a fixed point. I also completely expect that he has one last trick up his sleeve to get the people he's protecting out of there. (Maybe he'll remotely land the TARDIS around them?) But against a fully-fledged Darth Vader at the height of his power, there's very little else he can do.

Knowing that gives the scene so much more punch, too. You can see the Doc, like I said before, cornered in the last ray of light, defying Vader's power to protect two innocents, relying on a move that he must know won't stop Vader for long, as Vader himself advances along with the darkness and the fog. It gives the definite feel of a last stand against an unstoppable foe.Β

(Also, to respond to the critiques, I think the fact that the Doctor seems out of place is a plus, because, quite frankly, if the Doctor doesn't seem out of place in every scene imaginable... somebody's not doing their job.)
