The way I look at it is, he wasn't just an arch angel, but also a Trickster. He could have tricked Lucifer (I mean, isn't Luci kind of weak since he's in Nick and not his true/strong vessel?) into thinking he killed him. And then just when he's needed most he'll pop back up again like Cas did at the beginning of the season.

I was sulking for days (still am) that he died. I really hope he comes back. God bought cas back when cas died to save humanity. with any luck he might give gabe the same treatment. Poor thing. The show wont feel the same without him.
