If Céléstia had was my principal of high school, I immediately nested to fantasize over her and I would also have to try my luck.

Well there could be a few possibilities, Somebody's texting or playing video games while they are walking right in front of your path, Since you are 50 ft tall vehicles also drive pass you, Some people if they acknowledge you and don't want to pay attention to you will run, hide,or drive away into safety, People might be blind so they can't see you, People can be deaf so they would be able to see you but not hear you, or the closest equivalent of being blind or deaf, Sunglasses or eyepatches and music that we play through earbuds on our smartphones turned way too high, Those are a few examples among many but The better question should be, Who really has detention the one's who do pay attention to you which is a few or the crowd of people who don't?"
