You misunderstand my point. I have been inside Hot Topic before. I have paid money for Hot Topic t-shirts. I do not wish to condemn Hot Topic, not do I wish to condemn the people who shop their casually. I'm speaking of a greater issue than someone walking into a store.
This was written as a reaction to the popularity of the pop-punk/"emo" music genres (which honestly, has more in to do with the "normal people" you mention). And what I was seeing at the local venues. Namely the faux rebellion and willing apathy of those claiming to be "punk," which at it's best is about bringing attention the flaws and inherent hypocrisy of society. I hesitate to say it was being "sold out," because that would sound cliche, but it did bother me quite a bit that there were some folks who actually believed that Good Charlotte was punk rock. Hot Topic was simply a macguffen to address the issue, as that was what they all have in common.
Simply put, the song wasn't me wondering why there's so much conflict in the world... it was me saying everyone should wonder why there's so much conflict in the world.

I love how punk rock doesn't actually mean anything to its most vocal listeners. And anarchy is just a big shiny letter "A". And counterculture can be bought at the mall. And individuality is a group thing.

I dont give a flying fuck where you shop, but if you go in to a store to get an identity that will make you seem cool, deep or popular, i WILL laugh at you.
That's where the bashing of certain stores comes from, the retards who shop there, thinking they can purchase popularity or views.
I don't shop at hot topic, but this applies to other stores, who all have those customers wanting to buy something, and not just something material.

I admit I shop at Hot Topic qutie frequently. But I also agree with what you've said. I see so many people go in, thinking they can buy an identity that will make them instantly popular among a certain group at school. Me? I just like the style. Hot Topic has recently gone to shit, catering more to the scene style and what not rather than what it used to sell. But a few things remain the same.

btw i love books, i friends and i have read the entire Twilight series, blood and chocolate, Harry Potter the 2nd book (which sucks), Maximun Ride, and many many more by James Patterson (i just love his books)

Please don't take this the wrong way but this is mildly stereotypical. I shop at Hot Topic and well, to be quite blunt this is quite offensive.

Allow me to plead my case: The message is not "Shopping at Hot Topic makes you dumb," it is "Being dumb makes you shop at Hot Topic." As much as I hate to say it, there is a difference. Walking into the store does not automatically make you an apathetic hypocrite who will believe anything MTV tells you to believe, you have to be that before you decide to buy your identity. Hot Topic cannot sell you an identity without you allowing it to sell you an identity, and sadly, a lot of folks do. There is a greater problem in our culture than a store that sells funny t-shirts, I just addressed it with an example.
This song was inspired by several people I have known personally. Especially those I've tried talking politics with... and when you can't see past a companies marketing department selling Top 40 as Pirate Radio, imagine what you'll base your political opinions on.
