Description
Something I sketched and colored featuring the true main antagonist of my story. The picture was inspired by a MTG card that I (in my opinion) did not find particularly useful. I'll give you a hint: the artist of the card was John Avon.
Anyway, here's the first part of a synopsis on Dr. Gamma.
A bat dedicated to science, Dr. Gamma constantly strove to push the limits of our understanding of the universe and beyond. His research contributed to the development of an alternate renewable form of energy and a potential means of interstellar travel. He worked alongside the most brilliant minds on earth, including a tortoise named Dr. Travis, who was on the verge of completing a time machine. While many praised Dr. Gamma for his genius, those who personally knew him saw his cold harsh nature. He was not above publicly debasing those he disagreed with or personally attacking his colleagues when they fell short of his expectations. He also stole ideas from far lesser-known scientists on several occasions, believing that their concepts would have otherwise never been correctly applied or optimized to their full potential. His work took priority over everything else in his life, even his younger brother, Desmond.
One day, Desmond died from an unknown illness. Researchers at Dr. Gamma’s institution finished developing a cure for the illness only days afterwards. The loss genuinely affected Dr. Gamma enough that he could no longer concentrate on his studies. Despite his callous nature, he was subconsciously haunted by a promise he made to his late father to look after Desmond.
Dr. Gamma beseeched Dr. Travis to let him test his time machine, but Dr. Travis refused out of concern that the science behind time travel was still too uncertain. Dr. Travis hid the key to the machine within a secret compartment inside his shell. It was known that Dr. Travis suffered from severe depression, such that Dr. Gamma subtly persuaded him to commit suicide. As a collaborator in Dr. Travis’s projects, Dr. Gamma was granted access to his equipment, including the time machine.
Using the time machine, Dr. Gamma travelled back to when Desmond had just fallen ill and saved him with the cure. He discreetly informed his past self of what he had done, including what happened to Dr. Travis. Desmond overheard the conversation and was appalled. The past Dr. Gamma tried to convince Desmond that he had nothing to do with his future self’s actions, which never happened as far as their timeline was concerned. Desmond still viewed it as a reflection of Dr. Gamma’s deep-seeded cruelty and selfishness; that he (his future self) only saved him to ease his own conscience and would have otherwise never given him any consideration. Desmond thus permanently severed all ties with Dr. Gamma.
Flustered and confused, Dr. Gamma used the time machine to travel to various points in the future. He searched for a time when the world was unified by reason and knowledge. His searches all ended in disappointment. He then contemplated travelling back to save Desmond again, though without divulging any details. He ultimately decided that his brother was too “small-minded and unappreciative” to be worth saving. It was then that he pondered the possibility of alternate universes, large deviations from the general timeline that the time machine was limited to. Perhaps there existed a reality where his brother would be more understanding. However, he did not fully comprehend the science behind the time machine, much less that of multiversal travel.
Dr. Gamma travelled to a time distant enough in the future that all who knew him were long deceased. The science institution he worked for had closed. He posed as the great-grandson of Dr. Gamma and reopened the institution. His true goal was to devise a means of multiversal travel, though he had to advertise that the projects were far more general.
Dr. Gamma’s attention was drawn to a young employee named Dr. Theta…
