And the winners are...
First Place
The square template seemed to be hardest for people to work with creatively (we only got a few squares) but Whim-N-Wonder knocked it out of the park with this dream-like panel that's almost like a fairy tale or children's book adaption. It's mysterious and makes us want to know more. Even imagining where in the comic this takes place (beginning, middle, or end) puts a spin on the image. Absolutely stunning!
Second Place
origami-roses used their panel to full advantage;
movement and detail to the left and silence that highlights the character to the right.
The narrative bubble and state of the character offer bits of intrigue as to what the story might have been about,
once again making the reader want to know more. Wonderful work!
Third Place
This romantic piece seems simple at first, but JonathanWyke used the narrative bubble to full advantage, creating quite a story with one sentence. The specificity of "seventeen days" is especially intriguing, making the reading wonder at its significance. The characters are amazingly drawn, with a smart composition to draw the viewer into the moment. Splendid work all around.
Thanks to all who entered this first contest of mine as a community volunteer!
Next time we'll do something for the cartoons category, so stay tuned and feel free to send in ideas.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
For my first ever Cartoons & Comics contest, we're going to be doing a "one panel comic" contest.
Basically, it's a great contest to practice catching the interest of a viewer with one panel, and only one balloon of dialogue.
Read on for more details!
- You will be drawing a single comic panel. This comic panel must be new, having not been submitted before the contest was created. [August 19th, 2017]
- You must use one of the drawing templates seen below in the "templates" section.
- No cheating! Your panel cannot include smaller panels within it or multiple sequences without borders. It must be a single moment in time.
- Your comic MUST have one and only one balloon of dialogue. You may have multiple sentences, but it must be contained within one text balloon only. This balloon can either be a speech balloon, Narrative balloon OR a thought balloon. Either one is fine.
Advice: Comics are a visual medium. Try to make your balloon's text short, sweet, and enticing.
- Any amount of sound effects/onomatopoeia are fine.
- Your comic panel can be any genre. (sci-fi, adventure, fiction, etc.) But, the judges do prefer it to not be comedy because a one-panel contest brings out the memes in people.
- Both digital and traditional art are allowed in this contest.
- Your comic and characters must be original. No fan art or fan characters are allowed in this contest.
- You may use characters you've already created, though it's preferred if you come up with something completely new. (You won't lose points either way, but if you really want to hit the spirit of the contest on the head, go for something completely new.)
- You cannot re-draw old panels from previously existing comics you might already have.
- You MUST mention this contest in the description of your entry. If you don't, your submission will be removed from the category folder on the assumption you submitted there by mistake.
- You don't have to follow me to participate. (though checking in on the journal for any possible updates is a good idea)
You also don't have to ask for permission to participate. Just do it!
- You can have two entries, but that's the limit.
- Plagiarism is not allowed. (Pretty obvious rule) No tracing. No one should have an unfair advantage in the contest.
- To submit your entry, simply submit it to the DA category, One Panel Comics . (Found under Contests>2017>One Panel Comic Contest when you submit your entry.)
Please do not submit it to any other category, or we will miss it.
- I will also be adding the entries to this journal. If you don't see it here, you've probably submitted to the wrong category.
- When the contest is over, judging will begin! The judges are DrZime , DrMistyTang and ratscout .
We will be judging on several levels:
Artwork
Layout
Use of template
Use of single text balloon
Creativity
- Advice: when thinking up what you want to do for your panel, a good idea would be to think of it as either being at the beginning, middle or end of a story. These are the most exciting parts of a narrative, and should beckon the reader to read more, or brood over what they've just read.
Extra Points
You will receive an extra nod from the judges and a few extra points if you comment on all the entries with a meaningful comment. (must be at least two sentences and about the art).
Please encourage your fellow participants!
- If you have any additional questions, either comment here, or note DrZime .
Templates! I've decided to put up three templates for everyone to pick from when entering this contest--this way we're all on the same playing field.
You can either save these templates to your computer to work off of, or simply use the dimensions written below.
Traditional artists can print them out and work in them if need be.
All panels must be the same dimensions when submitted. Meaning, you can work larger than the final dimensions, but the final submitted image must be shrunk down to the appropriate document size.
The gray lines surrounding the panels may be deleted. They're only there so that traditional artists can print them out if they need to.
Option One, "portrait style" : (Pixels: 600 (width) by 900 (height))
Option Two, "landscape style" : (Pixels: 900 (width) by 600 (height))
Option Three, "Square": (Pixels: 600 (width) by 600 (height))
---------------------------------------------------------------
A couple of examples from our friends Lichtenstein and Moebius:
Your entries are due September 30th, midnight Arizona Time .
There will be no extensions. Use your time wisely and don't procrastinate!
Three prizes will be given by our panel of judges.
If you're interested in drawing a prize request for one of the winners (can be just a sketch or a full-blown drawing), please comment! The more the merrier!

Is material from Source Filmmaker allowed? I'm really not a great visual artist, which is why I rely on a computer to help me make my visual material.

Alright, I just have one question. Can I draw and take a picture of the artwork landscape? Like i'll draw it with the sketchpad laying horizontally and take a picture of it horizontally.

I'm in! Does it have to be the exact size of your templates? Could I submit something that's, for example, 1000 x 1500 pixels instead o' 600 x 900 pixels? Same proportions and all that.

I've got some ideas, but just one question just to be sure: For digital artists, should they download the template you provided, or can they just input the limits you've given into their drawing program?

Akogare [2017-08-23 13:26:29 +0000 UTC]
This sounds like fun! But I'm torn between participating or being a prize request artist. Seems like you might need the latter more?
I do have a question that might come up later for some. What are the rules about the usage of sound effects or are the only words/letters allowed must be contained in the balloon?
All the best with this contest!

Does the speech or thought balloon have to be coming from one of the characters, or can it be the voice of an unseen narrator?
