Don't mind the name - Smiledor is a joke name me and my sisters came up with that went too far, became it's own thing, and well... here we are. XD

Smiledor is a character who'll eventually be used in the Chronicles of Dru . Dru is a medieval-ish magic world. (which I won't be fully jumping into until after I've finished Jupiter.)

So... what's up with this guy? He's a Leerg - what you get when a dragon and a worm manage to have a kid. Obviously Leergs are a very rare occurrence (as rare as Tigons and Ligers). Most of the time they're infertile, but Smiledor here is a lucky exception. He's got a couple of kids with names as strange as his own.

Leergs are often banished from high society, but not for the reason you might think - it's not an interracial thing.
Leergs are banned from most cities/villages because they have the peculiar, uncontrollable, inborn ability to "mute" magic whenever they're near it. Wizards and witches can't make spells when a Leerg is around, and even potions and enchantments stop working. Magic bolts from a Leerg like a horse bolts from the smell of an elephant.
Even though wizards are also a rarity in the world of Dru, their enchantments are as common and convenient as electricity in our world. This makes Leergs very inconvenient. Things every city pays wizards for like eternally burning lamps, disease wards, barriers, heck- even water purification are get destroyed and have to be remade when a Leerg passes by.

This being the case, Leergs often live on their own far from cities. They're often socially inept, unschooled vagrants. The higher authorities don't know what to do about the Leerg problem except to turn them away at city gates. But, you can't really blame them. What if a person surviving on a magic spell were to suddenly have that spell dispersed? Not cool.

Not that Leergs can't find employment. They often find hiring opportunities with some of the more unscrupulous denizens of Dru. You can't find a criminal with a tracking spell if he's in the presence of a Leerg, you can't stop an assassin's blade if your barrier of protection suddenly fades away, you can't stop a burglary if your magical alarms won't sound... etc.

Having to live on the edges of society, Smiledor is a particularly jaded individual who can't help but derive pleasure from watching people suffer when their contrivances fail. And, even though his appearance may seem a little goofy at first, he can get really violent really quick with those teeth and claws.
