But seriously the way the story unfolds here is astounding. The slowness, the showcase of the life, and the awareness of what was already lost and of course the master bullying the student. This may be one of my favourite ones you've written yet. I really like this fantasy world you're building with all these failed hero stories. The last paragraph that tells you what's going on adds more meaning to the earlier, overall it's well put together. Nice concept and execution

Indeed, I think there's something to be said about how he isn't free either way. Sure he is practically property in this scenario but alternatively he served a very rigid purpose as a hero also. You tackle that notion in the story as well to great effect.
