Still Life in Pen

Another still life from drawing class, depicting the same skull, gnarly piece of wood, and glass crystal as my other still lifes (still lives?) leaning against a tree trunk. I used a variety of pen widths on this piece, and tried to display an equally wide variety of pen strokes, to signify different textures.Pens, 18x24, about 11 hours.

For an in-class piece, I'm enjoying the many-sided variety of textures going on here that often seems to be missing from classic school-type work. Much to look at here, and loads of appeals throughout the piece.

Thanks! My drawing teacher encouraged many different styles over the course of the semester, some more impressionistic and minimal, so when the pen assignment came along, I unleashed all my obsessive meticulousness. It ended up taking me so long, I missed the deadline and got no credit. Oh well!

did you sketch it out first in pencil or pen, or did you just go with it and start drawing in pen?

God, I... I don't even remember. It was so long ago. I'm gonna go ahead and guess I sketched it first, 'cause that's how I usually work nowadays.

Definitely some great textures going on here. My only concern is the tree being the same tonal value as the wood piece - the skull stands out being so much lighter, as does the crystal, but the tree and wood kind of merge together.

Yeah, I realized as I was drawing it that they blended together visually. But I thought to myself, "Hey, they're both wood, so it, like, makes sense!" More of a rationalization to justify my laziness than anything else.
