Description This verse is spoken by Jesus when his disciples came to him, asking “Who is the greatest in the kingdom in heaven”. In these times, we would probably think that the greatest in the kingdom of heaven are great and wise old prophets such as Elijah, Isaiah, or somebody else who is high in position in the hierarchy. But instead of Jesus telling them that, he picked a random little child, and establishes to his students that those who are like this child is the greatest in heaven, and those who receives the child in His name receives Christ.
The main point of what Jesus was trying to convey is NOT that we behave like children, we do need to act our age after all, but he want us to have a heart of the child. A heart that is soft, and not harden by the world’s desires. God wants us to be open to his word(Mark 4:23), depend on him like how we used to depend on our father when we were little, and always follow after Him. They know who their father is, they know that they need to obey them, and they know that they their father will give them what they need That way, by having a humble mindset, He can raise us up to be men of God that he has called all of his people to be. That’s why Jesus wants us to be like a little child, so we can see God as our Father, and to look to him for advice, needs, and to obey all that he says, because he know everything about you.
And the best thing about it: God loves his little ones, and he sent the Son of Man to seek which was lost(Matthew 18:11), which are those who are unsaved or backsliden. Jesus compares us to like little sheep, and when one out of a hundred gets lost, the shepard(our Father) will seek out the one who is lost, and our Father will rejoice over the one sheep that has been found so much more than the existing 99 sheep in the pen. God loves us so much, that he gave his only son so that we would not perish, but have eternal life with him in heaven(John 3:16). The question is, are we going to humble ourselves to accept his love, and be his little children.
Christ said in John 3:3 that unless we are born again, we cannot inherit the kingdom of heaven, and he even says in Matthew 18:2 that if we don’t covert ourself to like a child to our God, we can’t inherit the kingdom. So encourage you all humble yourselves. We may be smart in our eyes or in the worlds eyes, and I’m not against intelligent people, but can we accept the fact that compared to the knowledge of God, we don’t know anything. He who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted(Luke 14:11). Be attentive to His voice, and learn from him. Follow Christ, for he has provided the narrow way for us, like a child follows his father. And if you haven’t repented and turn away from sin, humble yourself. God knows everything about you(I John 3:20) and wants you to soften your heart as a child, so that he can raise you to be a great man of God in the future.
