Description Generosity is a gift from God, defined as a readiness to give more of something than strictly necessary. We can be generous not only with our finances, but also with our time spent to encourage or with any other resource that the other person who is not as fortunate. Our liberty in giving not only helps the person who is receiving, but also helps you by making you feel better. For he who waters will also be watered himself(Proverbs 11:25). Generosity comes ultimately from the heart, not how much you have in your wallet.
At the beginning of Matthew 6, Jesus continues in his Sermon on the Mount, addressing his moral teaching to the multitudes and his disciples. One of the topics he talks about is the topic of charitable deeds:
”“Watch out! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven. When you give to someone in need, don’t do as the hypocrites do—blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I tell you the truth, they have received all the reward they will ever get. But when you give to someone in need, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.“ (Matthew‬ ‭6‬:‭1‬-‭4‬ ‭NLT‬‬)
The main point Jesus was trying to make was that we shouldn’t view our generous nature as a show to make yourself admired, but to view our generous nature as a way actually help that person in need. Think about it, when you do a charitable deed, you give freely without expecting anything in return, but when you’re “blowing the trumpet” to get everybody’s attention of your act of charity, you are expecting admiration by others in return. That’s not what Christ wants for our lives. He wants us to kind, loving and gentle; and not because it makes us look good before other people. That’s the reason why Christ uses the word “hypocrite” referring to those people, someone pretend to be someone to get their own sort of gain.
This verse also displays that those people will receive the reward of man which is admiration and recognition, but will not get then reward God will give you. For it is said that whoever is generous to the poor is generous to God, and He will repay him(Proverbs 19:17). But what reward does God give us for being generous in secret? That reward is treasures in heaven spoken of in Matthew 6: 20-21. When we give in secret, people don’t see us, but God sees us. He sees everything that we do, and he honors your generosity everyday. Whether you expect it or not, God will bless you and reward you for it.
So my friends, I want to encourage you with this simple message. When you are being kind and generous to other people, do it because you want to be kind and generous, not to be famous. God loves a cheerful giver. (II Corinthians 9:7)
