Description While I will never have the chance to be a student of his, I have learned a lot from him throughout my life. From studying his and his sons' work on a collection of X-Men trading cards as a child, to looking at the work put out on his own Sgt. Rock, Hawkman, and many of the other DC characters he's worked on..... Becoming highly inspired thanks to The Kubert School's presentation two years back at New York Comic Con and then finally meeting and speaking to the man himself..... Hearing from him on orientation day and receiving greetings from him nearly every day at school.....I am truly blessed to have known the legend that was and is Joe Kubert. Rest in peace.

Joe would be proud of the effort you put into this. He was an awesome teacher but more than his ability to teach you art was his ability to teach you to be a good person. Take what you can from your experience at the school while you're there. Don't be afraid to go up to any of the teachers at any time and have them show you something, especially Adam and Andy. I know from personal experience that if you buddy up to Andy, you might just get lucky enough to get invited up to his studio. Your time there is precious and limited. Make the most of it.

Thanks a lot. And yeah I will be getting very close with the school. I was at the funeral today and had a brief heart to heart with Adam. I didn't get a chance to talk to Andy but I will have him as a teacher this coming year. It was great to see all those who came out to pay their respects. It's going to be a rough first week back at school, but the legacy continues, and I will push myself even harder now.

good. my other piece of advice is this..Listen to Mike Chen. Some students don't know what to think of Mike to begin with cause he can come across as a Sarcastic Jerk. The only reason Mike is like that is because he has seen literally hundreds of students come through there thinking they are God's gift to art only to graduate and be nothing. There is a very real world waiting for you once you leave that school. He really does have your best interests at heart. Now this is important. Ask your teachers to demo for you, especially in narative. Make them show you how to render all sorts of different textures in pencil. Even as Kim Demulder how he would render stuff. The guy is an amazing inker. Nothing beats watching it done. Now since Joe is no longer with us, I'll give you a little bit of his wisdom. None of the previous advice matters if you can't tell a story with your art. Anybody can learn to draw a nice picture, Not everybody can learn to tell a story. I hope you don't mind me giving you this advice, I've just been there and these are things I wish I'd have thought of while I was there.

Haha, oh man, Mike Chen during the interview seemed so serious. He's hilarious, and he's full of great advice. He's given me a very in-depth critique before. Oh and trust me, the God's gift thing still goes on. I wish I had Kim in my first year. And yeah, I hear you, really appreciate it. You graduated from the school?

Yeah, I graduated in 2003. My second year was the first year that Andy taught. It was pretty cool to be one of his first students. He used to like to come down and play basketball with me and a friend a lot..and he was pretty good. We threw a end of the year party and Andy came to it, he got pretty drunk. I had a Foos Ball Table and he partnered up with me, but he sucked cause he was so drunk. It was awesome. Somehow we still beat all the competition. My only regret is that I didn't get to have Adam as a teacher. He started teaching 1st yr students when I was in my second year. Have you had him? I always wanted to know what he taught.

Haha, from what I hear Andy is a really cool guy. He seems like it. I've only had one chance to have a full conversation with him before and he was really nice. That's a pretty funny story. And yeah I was lucky to have Adam as a teacher. Really great guy and always helpful. He knew how to make the flow of my pages more effective and he always had several different results. He teaches first year narrative. He taught two first year classes and Fernando Ruiz taught the other.

yeah, i had Fernando. I always loved Adam's style so I was bummed that I missed out on learning from him. Would you mind telling me what kind of assignments he gave you. Did he show you how he pencils and renders things?

He showed us certain techniques, but he really wanted us to discover our own styles. But he would show how he renders and separates lighting and shadows. He gave us assignments where we would use the face of a Hulk he drew, the drawing was replicated four times on a piece of paper, and we should render each one differently based on the type of light source we used. One early assignment was drawing a siz panel page that featured a 4 year old boy/girl discovering his/her puppy amidst a scene of destruction. The purpose was to convey emotion and mood and using a child since a lot of artists have a hard time drawing kids. A lot of assignments were based on actual scripts either he worked on or sample ones he got from Marvel. For each one he helped us a lot when it came to the flow of the pages and he really tried to push us to get the most effective storytelling through page flow, camera angles, emotion, etc. One particular script that dealt with Thor and the death of Odin dealt with a sense of loneliness and sadness. The very last panel of the three pages was a flashback of Thor and Loki sparring as kids. Since that was a flashback panel, Adam explained how it can be visually different from the rest of the pages since it was a flashback. So the rest of the pages were penciled and inked as usual, but the flashback could have been like ink wash, charcoal, tonal, something like that to separate it from everything else.

Thanks for sharing all that with me. It really sounds like you got a lot of useful info out of Adam. I would have absolutely loved having him for a teacher. Not that it wasn't great having Joe and Andy, but Adam was always one of my favorite pencilers. Well if you ever need any sort of advice concerning the school or anything at all, let me know.

No problem man, and yeah of course. Actually now that I'm back, I found out Adam is taking over for third year narrative. First years won't be getting him at all now.
