It is? I was under the impression that this happens during the time Stoic and the others are searching for the dragon's nest.

He's a sneaky one. If he could sit on the rock outcrop when Hiccup first went down to him, being totally invisible to the boy until he decided to show itself, and charge out of nowhere when Astrid was poking him with an axe, then he can "just appear" next to him. Especially considering that the camera in the previous shot is rather close to Hiccup. Toothless might have just been behind the shot and walked up to him when he was looking at the flying dragon.

I love that happy/thoughtful look on Toothless's face as he stares at the sky, makes him so adorable. Like he's nostalgic or something. Kinda makes Hiccup guilty. That dragon really needs a hug, from me.
