what would win in a fight a maus tank or IS3

Propably IS3. Maus had bigger gun and more armor, but IS3 has more sloped armor and much better mobility and has smaller silhouette.

good point but the maus was huge and slow

And they never finished one.

Paper designs that don't get built never win battles.

Actually there were a couple built but they were never used sadly

Overweight, over designed, and given the miserable reliability of its lighter cousins, deploying this armored stupidity would had been a nightmare.

On both sides I admit the thing wouldn't make it far before it craps out but the thing is a mobile bunker it would pin an entire battalion Β for a minute but most likely soon gettin destroyed by a fighter bomber or a cluster of battalions

Mobile fortresses have always failed in the long run, but the Mause gets mystic, Β romance and a fan base that Β is wholly undeserved. Β If it had not been created by the 3rd Reich, all it would receive would be a shrug.

It was created in desperation by half crazed scientists and is only liked because it's ridiculous

I've heard that it was better as a tank destroyer than for infantry support.

Big gun, good speed... understandable.

I hear that IS-3 tank is better than Tiger Tank?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dukecz In reply to IndonesianAWL [2010-09-10 11:23:13 +0000 UTC]

Thats true but Tiger tank was build between 1942 - 1944 and this is 1945+.

IS-3 has bigger gun, better armor shape... maybe worse radio equipment and only 4 crew. IS-3 is more like Tiger II (King Tiger)

IndonesianAWL In reply to Dukecz [2010-09-10 15:10:48 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. But I can think how if Soviet has used IS-3 tank in WWII.

150-250mm for armor, the thickest armor in WWII. And 122mm Gun, the biggest calibre in WWII too. But I hear that (again) British Centurion Tank is better than IS-3 for capability?

Dukecz In reply to IndonesianAWL [2010-09-11 10:46:59 +0000 UTC]

They propably didnt use it in WWII.

I dont know how Centurion, but IS-3 was quite unreliable until modernisation. Only other disadvantage is 4 crew in tank (leads to worse combat efficiency). But i dont see any other advantage of Centurion.

Well, in American tanks like M26 Pershing, the commander operated the radio, so the hull gunner really had nothing necessary to do, unless the driver was killed; he had an auxiliary set of driving controls instead of radio.

IndonesianAWL In reply to Dukecz [2010-09-24 08:44:17 +0000 UTC]

Sorry I'm late to reply.

But IS-3 has bad radio transmitter.
Oh, Centurion is one of the best tank in that era. See Six-Day war. Centurion tank is the match enemy for Soviet T-55. But maybe Centurion become a bad tank after USA used M60 Patton tank.
But, Centurion 105mm gun is one of the best medium tank canon.

Dukecz In reply to IndonesianAWL [2010-09-24 14:29:44 +0000 UTC]

I will look for more informations about it.
Yep 4 ppl in soviet tanks is caused by missing dedicated radio operator so no surprise they have bad radioes. Nothing changed from wwii.

Maybe it will be interesting to compare prices.

IndonesianAWL In reply to Dukecz [2010-09-24 14:40:12 +0000 UTC]

Hmm.. yes. Israeli Army has strong heavy support fire with Centurion tank plus Sherman Firefly tank.
Hmm.. it is why T-34 has slow reaction when they spotted by enemies. But now I hear that T-72 and T-90 is good enough at radio system.

Yes. Rheinmetall also used British 105mm gun concept to make their L22 canon. But it is ironic if British L55 gun was finished at WWII but first used at 1947.
