Description

Only a few kilometres from the Ecuadorian Border this sanctuary attracts pilgrims form both Columbia and Ecuador. As most of the churches in these parts, it is dedicated to the Nuestra Señora - the Virgin Mary. The most interesting part from a tourist’s point of view is the imposing architecture on the mountain slope with the bridge over the canyon. From the road, the church can be reached by a long staircase. The present building dates back to the early 20th century. When I visited the sanctuary, there was a lot going on - whole school classes came down the stairs praying and carrying huge flags and a folk dance group performed their dances. For the first time, I had the feeling that I had arrived in the Andean region.

Das Heiligtum liegt nur wenige Kilometer von der ecuadorianischen Grenze entfernt und zieht Pilger aus Kolumbien und Ecuador an. Wie die die meisten Kirchen in dieser Gegend ist es der Nuestra Señora geweiht – also der Jungfrau Maria. Interessant für Touristen ist natürlich vor allem die imposante Architektur an der Bergflanke mit der Brücke über die Schlucht. Der heutige Bau stammt aus dem frühen 20. Jahrhundert. Die Kirche ist über eine lange Treppe zu erreichen. Als ich das Heiligtum besuchte, war einiges los – ganze Schulklassen kamen betend mit riesigen Fahnen die Treppe herab und eine Volkstanzgruppe führe ihre Tänze auf. Das erste Mal hatte ich das Gefühl, dass ich jetzt in der Andenregion angekommen bin.
