Mexico City ist eine Stadt der Superlative - und das nicht nur, was die Einwohnerzahl angeht. Alles schein hier größer zu sein, als anderswo. Das gilt natürlich auch für die Kathedrale. Schon wenn man sich die Fassade ansieht, kommt es einem vor, also seien zwei Krichen aneinandergebaut. Eine davon ist schrecklich windschief. Schließlich steht die gesamte Innenstadt auf einem Sumpf. Zu Zeiten der Azteken war hier das Zentrum ihrer Hauptstadt Tenochtitlán und die lag damals noch auf einem See. Die Ausgrabungsstätten des Templo Mayor sind gleich neben der Kirche.

Mexico City is a city of extremes - and not only because of its sheer size. Everything seems to be bigger than anywhere else, including the cathedral. Looking at the building it seems like two churches with one leaning dangerously toward the other. After all, the city centre ist built on a swamp that used to be a lake. Back in Aztek times, this was where they had their capital, Tenochtitlán. The excavations site of their Templo Mayor is right next to the cathedral.
