Wonderful work

Actually such lens for cameras doesn't exist* You have to do a lot of strange stuff like combining lenses etc.

*There are two exceptions - Minolta 1x-3x lens and Canon MP-E65 lens - but they are very rare and damn expensive ;D

Very nicely done. I think though you might have a couple spots of dust on your sensor, which show up when you set the aperture really small.

Nie lubisz zimy? to czemu chcesz do Norwegii jechać?! ja kocham zimę ale chyba jak każą porę roku... może poza latem bo moja skóra jakoś nienajlepiej toleruje rakotwórcze promieniowanie UV

So crisp!

I don't know how you manage to find good pictures, when I go out, I find that my pictures are lacking some sort of energy as your pictures. My photo gallery is nothing like yours!

The snowflake looks a bit like plastic though, might want to somehow get the snowflake looking a bit more opaque.

Other than that, not a bad capture!

Dunadan-from-Bag-End In reply to PlanksAndSticks [2007-11-15 15:01:20 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... dunno... I think theproblems lies in details and postprocessing. Saying details I meant such things like framing or perspective... I found that you use compact camera - and this may be the problem. In example in compact cameras it's hard to find those with real wide angle ( 35mm eq for film frame is in theory wide angle but... it's too little ). If it comes to tele or portret shots - I fiund this pic in four gallery: [link] - it was taken at 15mm focal length! magnification was done here by cropping ( compacts have very small matrixes ) but geometry of image is still the same ( 15mm lens is extreme wide angle ).
Now about detailes with this bird on gum-tree - first - you cut his tail. Next, you used horisontal framing while bird is sitting vertically - you can use horsintal frame but in certain conditions - rather not here. Another problem - light - photo was taken in shadow while background is in light - this causes contrasts although it's no big deal in THIS photo. I would rather took profile shot of this bird here - if it was possible ofcourse.
About postprocessing - well it's lottery, I can't say much until I have full-frame photo in Photoshop or Lightroom

Anyway - keep hooting! read some basics about framing ( like strong points rule ), lighting and postprocessing - adjusting contrast, framing/cropping, sharpening ( very important issue - many people oversharpen their images! ), increase in dynmic range or even HDR techniuques ( although I don't like HDR ).

About snowflake - well I caould't do much about its appearance - it was as it was but your're right about it's pastic look. This photo isn't reallly good - there is a lot of details in background some noise ( although I like it ) and STILL problem with DoF... but I'll change it next time

Actually, that picture was taken before I had a SLR, way back in 2005. Now, I take my pictures with a Pentax istD* which is a mid range amateur camera. The old one was a Nikon Cool Pix which is ok, but now is not used.

My current (average) focal length is 125mm in case if you are wondering.

But even those critiques has been helpful, thanks.

I'm glad I could help. *ist was pretty good cam - I was thinking of buying it before Minolta prices went drastically down. 125? or rather 135mm? anyway it's good focal length

PlanksAndSticks In reply to Dunadan-from-Bag-End [2007-11-15 15:19:56 +0000 UTC]

It is a Sigma 18mm-125mm lens which is not too bad. But I am not an expert in lens details and such.

Dunadan-from-Bag-End In reply to PlanksAndSticks [2007-11-15 15:21:12 +0000 UTC]

I see. Well, usually it'd better to have fixed-focal-length lens - I haven't got such

PlanksAndSticks In reply to Dunadan-from-Bag-End [2007-11-15 15:28:00 +0000 UTC]

And by the way, the kookaburra is not cropped in any ways, that is the original picture, just some slight colour correction done to it.

Here is another bird photo I took today:
[link]

The lighting was an issue though, it was taken at 5pm when the sun's glare is at its strongest making images whitewashed, so it was challenging trying to get the right angle out of this bird.

Now, this one is much better! there are only two problems here - some lack in details in blacks and detailed background. First one can be solved by higher exposure ( ofcourse when taking photo ) but then there would be some burns in whites - typical problem of contrast light. This is why the time for taking photos is sunset or sunrise ( although light is very warm then ).
About background - probably your equipement doesn't allow you to have more blurred background - it depends on DoF which depends on aperture size...
Anyway I'd recommend buying sigma 70-300 APO lens - it's cheap and will give you huge possibilities...
