    Carandas gently put down her teacup and tried to meet Mirixiana's gaze. Few words had been exchanged since they had joined each other in the living room for breakfast. Mirixiana stubbornly kept her eyes downcast, as if she were guilty of something.

    "Would you like some more tea, Lady Carandas?" inquired the maid with a newfound deference, tinged with awe and boundless admiration. After all, wasn't she employed in the very home of the woman who had just saved the city from ruin the day before? All the staff held the two sisters in high esteem, but since yesterday, this feeling had bordered on veneration when it came to Mirixiana. It was only a short step from there to being referred to as Saint Mirixiana.

    "Gladly," replied Carandas. "Would you like some too, Miri?"

    "Yes, thank you," replied the priestess.

    Carandas flicked her toes out of her tasselled slippers and waved them in front of her sister's nose.

    "Cara! Those aren't manners!"

    "If that's the only way to get your attention, then I don't give a damn about manners... and then we're among ourselves."

    "That's true. Forgive me for being aloof. Isn't Kitz here? She should be on her second plate of scrambled eggs by now..."

    "She was still asleep when I came downstairs. She shouldn't be long now."

    The two sisters stared at each other for a long moment, without speaking. Words were pointless between them anyway.

    "I think we were both pretty good yesterday," Carandas said at last. "Especially you, in fact. You were divine!"

    "Without the Goddess and without you, I would have failed... I had a lot of support..."

    "Says she who commands the raging elements! It was epic! Memorable! Heroic and unimaginably lyrical! You, alone in the face of the murderous ocean, it was so romantic! I feel so insignificant!"

    Mirixiana stood up and started pacing.

    "What are we going to do with the Sihedron now?"

    "I don't know, Miri. Use it against Xin probably. And keep it safe in my portable hole for the time being, most certainly. We'll decide with the Heidmarchs this very afternoon."

    Carandas reposa doucement sa tasse de thé et tenta de capter le regard de Mirixiana. Peu de paroles avaient été échangées depuis qu’elles s’étaient rejointes dans le salon pour y prendre leur petit déjeuner. Mirixiana gardait obstinément les yeux baissés, comme si elle était coupable de quelque chose.

    « Reprendrez-vous un peu plus de thé, Lady Carandas ? » s’enquit la domestique avec une déférence toute nouvelle, empreinte de crainte et d’une admiration sans limite. Après tout, n’était-elle pas employée dans la demeure même de celle qui avait sauvé la cité de la ruine la veille ? Tout le personnel du manoir vouait un grand respect aux deux sœurs mais depuis hier, ce sentiment frisait la vénération quand il s’agissait de Mirixiana. D’ici à ce que le peuple l’appelle Sainte Mirixiana, il n’y avait qu’un pas.

    « Volontiers, » répondit Carandas. « Tu en reprends toi aussi Miri ? »

    « Oui merci, » répondit la prêtresse.

    Carandas fit jouer ses orteils hors de ses pantoufles à pompons et les agita devant le nez de sa sœur.

    « Cara ! Ce ne sont pas des manières ! »

    « Si c’est là la seule façon d’attirer ton attention, alors je me contrefiche des bonnes manières comme d’une guigne… et puis nous sommes entre nous. »

    « C’est vrai. Pardonne-moi de me montrer distante. Kitz n’est pas là ? Elle devrait déjà en être à sa deuxième assiette d’œufs brouillés… »

    « Elle dormait encore lorsque je suis descendue. Elle ne devrait plus tarder. »

    Les deux sœurs restèrent un long moment le regard rivé sur celui de l’autre, sans parler. Les mots étaient inutiles entre elles de toute façon.

    « Je crois que l’on a été plutôt bonnes hier, » dit enfin Carandas. « Surtout toi en fait. Tu as été divine ! »

    « Sans la Déesse et sans toi, j’aurais échoué… j’ai eu beaucoup de soutien… »

    « Dit celle qui commande aux éléments déchainés ! C’était épique ! Mémorable ! Héroïque et d’un lyrisme inimaginable ! Toi, seule face à l’océan meurtrier, c’était d’un romanesque ! Je me sens tellement insignifiante ! »

    Mirixiana se leva et se mit à faire les cent pas.

    « Que va-t-on faire du Sihedron à présent ? »

    « Je ne sais pas, Miri. L’utiliser contre Xin probablement. Et le garder en lieu sûr dans mon trou portable dans l’immédiat, très certainement. Nous aviserons avec les Heidmarch cet après-midi. »
