Description Homura - Madoka Magica

I watched Madoka at the urging of a friend and was an INSTANT fan. I seriously watched the entire series in one foul swoop, staying up until like 5 in the morning just so I could finish it. As a general rule I love "butterfly effect" type movies, and I love Homura's character. I made this costume to compete in 2012's WCS Prelims, and got top 10 with my partner Envel.

Construction Details:

Jacket: The jacket is fully lined and zips up the front. I made the jacket out of a white stretch poplin, and made my own edging out of a black duck cotton. I satin stitched around all of the edges of the black for a crisp look. The black underskirt is made out of jersey knit.

Skirt: The skirt is in two pieces, the pleated overskirt and the ruffled underskirt. In retrospect I should have made it one piece because my underskirt kept shifting under the pleated skirt and you don't see it sometimes. The overskirt was made out of a hand dyed suiting fabric. I hand pleated it and starched the crap out of it. The underskirt is a white stretch poplin that I ruffled with a ruffler foot.

Stockings: The stockings are one continuous piece that includes a shoe cover (for that slegging look). They were sewn out of a thick black spandex. The diamonds on the side were added using a hand made stencil and then airbrushed on. I tried my best to match the paint to my bows.

Shield: The shield was made out of EVA foam. There are two layers of foam to create dimension. I used a heat tool to carve the grooves, and used paper clay to sculpt the raised details. The shield was sealed with silicone caulk and plasti-dip. The center piece of the shield features gears that were made out of shrinky dink plastic, and the silver dome piece was made out of wonderflex I formed over a plastic sphere. Two red resin cast gems were added. The shield was painted with gold and silver acrylics and then weathered with brown and black paints.

Other Details: The soul gem was sculpted by hand and cast in purple resin, the setting was sculpted by hand then molded with silicon. I then poured melted gold colored hot glue in the mold, hot glue game me a nice flexible setting. The gem was attached to he hand using spirit gum. The wig was a "Homura" style wig I purchased on e-bay, I trimmed the bangs and cut a inverted V in the back. The headband is a black satin headband that I glued black rhinestones to. The grenade was bought at a dollar store and painted green.
