I did this a few years ago and its by no means as good as professional standard VFX make-up (as you can see, I kind of got bored below the neck and the make-up on the body is pretty rubbish and rushed). Anyway, some of you guys have asked how I did the make-up so that you can have a go yourselves, and I figured it would be easier to put up some tips here. Just a disclaimer - I'm not a pro make-up artist so please just take this as suggestions and not rules! oh, and be kind to your actors, it won't be comfortable!

I've never really been trained in proper make-up techniques so I kinda made it up as I went along. To get the peeling skin look I used cheap toilet paper and latex (you can buy a tub of liquid latex from any art store for about £10). Tear up the tissue into uneven bits with jagged edges and use a sponge to dab the skin with latex before sticking the tissue on. Then use extra latex on top where needed to stick it down. You need to wait for the latex to dry before adding paint. I used lots of cheap camouflage paint which can be found at army surplus stores (but beware it's hard to wash off!), or you could use basic face paint. Don't worry too much about getting professional stuff unless you have a big budget. Paint a base coat of whatever dark colour you want over the latex and then use a paint brush to add blue/grey veins and detail/ cuts etc. I put lots of red around the eyes and darkened them to make them look sunken and creepy. I made my own fake blood with red food colouring and a tin of treacle. If you get a dollop in your hand and then go outside and flick it at the actor from a distance then it looks more like blood splats. I also used golden syrup to create that slimy look through his hair and down his face (it wasn't very comfotable for the actor!). It often helps if you get them to put some Vaseline around their eyebrows and hair line so when they take the latex off it's not too painful!
