This is a really interesting story.

From a psychological standpoint (something I know that our hero would have no knowledge), I'd pick option 1, even though I strongly believe in option 2.
Why?
Because the adrenaline rush from a fire fight will pump you full of the stuff and in a life-threatening situation, you'd be able to call upon the unnatural strength built up within the body. After the quick distraction, they can easily take off running.
Apparently, the Fio believes that it is strategically necessary that the humans be given a better chance at winning this one too, so I won't argue with it. In either decision, I think something right will be done towards consolidating towards big objectives.

Option 1. I said run last time but if Randell and co. are gonna keep running into potental fights, might as well grow a pair and kill some orks!
Just remember, kill the big orks first so the rest start fighting themselves over whos da boss.
P.S. Great story. Got me hooked on it!

That's how ya fight da greenskins. But, I am sure orks are used to unorganized fighting. They go fight just because they love to. And, another ork would probably love to see his larger counterpart get fragged so he can call himself the biggest and da baddest.
Thanks for all your feedback. I love to read it. Hopefully you will continue to help with the story.

I'd have to say Option 1.
The best way to do it would be to do as you said, wait until the IG are right on top of the Orks then open up with a quick barrage from behind to confuse the greenskins. As for the drone, I think dropping the orbs from about 50 or so feet would be the best way to go. Yes, the Orks would spot it and may even fire on it, but Orks like the Dakka-Dakka. (I mean, who doesn't?) Trying to accurately hit tiny, fast moving object in the sky with an automatic weapon isn't that easy. Plus they may be distracted by the IG charging at them.
Once the battle starts, they should leave and let the Orks and IG fight it out. Chances are if the Orks win, they won't bother going after four people. And if the IG when then they'll probably move onto their next objective rather than look for whoever confused the Orks, that and they may be too tired or undermanned to start searching.

Great observation. It is tough to communicate tactical decisions to Kai'Faan who doesn't understand Low Gothic. Even though the drones have an AI module built into them for self thought, the are no more smarter than a squirrel.
But, running away to let the rest duke it out is a good decision as well. Lets see how this pans out.

Hmm...
Support the Guard against the Orks, with just, what, 4 beings in total?
Yeah, I don't think that'd end well for us.
So let's go for Option 2.
If nothing else, if an Ork DOES find us, well, what will the thing go for?
The Imperial Guard with their massive amount of soldiers, or 4 people just running away?
I'd bet the Orks would want to go and fight the IG more than they'd want to hunt us down, which might lead to them missing this fun fight.
And this way we get to keep those small robot things, maybe - I don't think they were bad to have, right?
So, yeah, Option 2 is a good way to stay alive, I think.
(and it will put more stuff between us and those other Tau who didn't help us, which is always very nice)

DustyGrafix In reply to Axl12 [2010-03-21 15:13:28 +0000 UTC]
You bring across a great point. Orks are attracted to the bigger and better fight. Obviously, they are already excited about the upcoming charge from the Imperial guards. To put up a huge fight with 4 soldiers.....no wait....make that 3 soldiers, and a non-combative being and his assistant drone that isn't made for war is not very possible.
Too many dangerous variables for option 1, so I see your point that sneaking away to complete the mission is much much safer.
Your vote is counted. It is a close vote, I don't know what the outcome will be until I close the votes.

Well, the drone has the same software as the portable CPU unit that Kai'Faan carries. So, scanning the caverns for those underground plant pods might help. But alas, you are right, it would be satisfactory to blast some more Ork scum.

I've got a feeling Randall would to save the guardsmen. I bet a lot of them are like him: farmboys with no choice. Believe you me; I’m rooting for those Guardsmen! Drop those bombs into the Orks and kill kill every last one of those godless xenos! (no offence to Xin)
+ you’ve got good art (Xin looks goood).

It is rough to tell. Randall left the first encounter alone, but maybe because he had history with them. This group seems just like the people Randall used to be. So, saving them could be a possibility.
Thanks for your vote, and for the compliment of Xin'Vauk. I'm sure she would appreciate it.

I'm going to go with option one.
I'd give a load of justification, but I'm sleepy right now... Long story short, in the best case scenario, we get the guardsmen to help us out; the Imperium has a history of being at least cooly polite to the Tau Empire, especially when they're fighting the same foe. Worst case, they charge us as well, in which case our Stealth Trooper can our carbines can lay down supressive fire while we back off (Pulse Carbines S 5, AP 5, Assault 1, Pinning, kills guardsmen to death). We give them enough of a show, they may think there's more of us than there are. Just hope we don't loose that drone. It's handy.

DustyGrafix In reply to LoZCollector [2010-03-21 14:58:37 +0000 UTC]
You bring across a great point. And you are right, there have been some instances where IG have employed the help of the Tau Empire (ie: Kill Team by Gav Thorpe). But those cases are few and far between. Plus, the Imperium don't even know that Tau are present, so if the Guard find out, the chances of hold fire and ask questions first might be slim (depending on the sergeant leading).
But, carbines will be good to use while falling back (pinning caused by the underslung photon grenades) so chances of escaping are good. Lets just hope that the drone (kor'vesa) makes it as well.

Very difficult decision. I'd have to go with number one, because I think Randal would make a good leader of men, and would appear to the other men as a "Knight in shining armor" so to speak, making it much easier to convince them to follow him.
Also, I don't think you should leave a chance to make an ambush, SPESHALEEZ WEN YOOZ GITZ TA SEEZ DA LOOK OV SAPRIZE ON DEM GREENSKINZ FAYSEZ!

DustyGrafix In reply to extraintelegence [2010-03-19 04:58:00 +0000 UTC]
He could make a leader. He still has a lot of inner conflict that he needs to work out. Lets just hope that the very men he is trying to save won't look at him as a heretic, and shoot him, or his friends on the spot.
I always love reading your observations. Much more fun than writing the story itself. Thanks for the vote.

I'm flattered, thank you.
That reminds me, I thought of another reason. If they route the Orks There is a potential that the Guard will at least not try and kill them, but if they don't, the Orks will finish of the Guard and either fortify or move into the cave to scavenge their newly looted material, and will be a real pain, at the least.
Of course, I can't bank on this, Orks are rather unpredictable. Either way, I'm hoping that the Guardsmen will have a sense of honor equal with their faith in the Emperor.

Do we desire to loose big or loose small? Guardsmen are always used has cannon fodder. Guardsmen commanders have the tendency to piss their men in the wind. Yet, i feel somewhat uncomfortable allowing the slaughter of these guardsmen. Im going for vote number 1. With accurate plasma volleys and the element of surprise. I think Randall and his entourage should be able to handle the orks. Maybe the guardsmen are just a bunch of recruits with no real intent to fight and die for the will of the Emperor. Perhaps it is safe to assume that after the orks are fried by plasma fire the guardsmen might help randall thats if their commanding officer is waxed during the chaos.
Creation cannot be manisted without thought

DustyGrafix In reply to Berlion [2010-03-19 01:51:28 +0000 UTC]
Great observation. The inner conflict is killing Randall, I'm sure of it. Will his guilty conscious get the best of him? 30+ orks and countless grots scrambling about, it would be hard to take them all with 3 soldiers and a non-combative drone. The least they can do is take some focus off the guardsmen before they reach the bunker.
Stay tuned. This vote is a close one. I don't know how this will end up next week. Thanks for your vote, and the always AMAZING feedback.

Your words ring true, my friend. His anger and fury come from the feeling of carelessness from his own kind. He has had a rough and pathetic life so far, and for the first time, someone shows compassion and hope. It is tough NOT to help. The inner conflict is tearing him apart. As much as Randall hates the Imperium, he still feel like he needs to defend his inner human. He loses a little of himself every day.
