GAH, a day off.. ah, well, it's saturday, the end of the week
well, if they go around, the Imp. Guard. might spot them and nail them.
If he goes to them and warns them, how will he get away?
Sure, he could warn them, but he might be wrong and it might not be following him.
But even so, if he gets down there and tries to leave, they'll shoot 'em.
He'd better have a believable enough reason to leave the area, a reason that he can persuade the Imprial Guard with.
I say 1.
He could tell them about the following threat (if it's there) and tell them that the Tau are already spies for the Imperium. The Imperial guard might fall for that but it'd be a long shot
But he could jsut join the fight, allow the Tau to skirt the Guardsmen's location, and walk backwards during the firefight, so he can rally with the Tau

Very true. Either that, or join back up with the ranks, and be content knowing he has gotten the Tau that far. They are almost there.

Tough call....
Having his old regiment to help fight whatever is coming would be a boon, but chances are he'd be shot on sight. He's been AWOL (it was unintentional but still...) for several days and shows up like nothing happened with a Tau weapon in his hands?
On the other hand, letting the IG handle whatever is coming might not be a good idea either. Whatever is following them could be too strong for the regiment to handle, but then, I share no great love for the Imperial Guard (yes, they do have cool toys but what's the point of having them if your commander kills you to raise the moral of the rest of your squad before you can play with them?) so I say option 2. Let he's old regiment deal with whatever it is while our heroes book it the hell outta there.

DustyGrafix In reply to MaxwellCross [2010-03-04 05:25:20 +0000 UTC]
YOu have brought across some very good points. I do think that Randall, even though he isn't the smartest soldier, might have enough sense to leave his xeno weapon behind. After all, he was afraid to come back when he still had a xeno bandage on his head.
A big difference to Randall helping his ol' squadmates fight whatever is coming, is that they will know what is coming and will be prepared to fight. If he leaves them be, this terror can be right on the squad without warning.
Good choice though. The percentage of surviving this next chapter is greatly increased if he went for option two.

I'd go with 1. Like in many cases, the imperium will work with the Tau IF there is a threat much greater than each other. All though the Tau really don't comprehend the working s of Chaos, the IG do. I hope they have psykers to keep the deamonic forces at bay for a while until it can be killed.

DustyGrafix In reply to gyro5 [2010-03-04 00:51:50 +0000 UTC]
You are correct about IG knowing the battles of chaos. But I don't know if they would put a psyker in a standard patrol squad. Plus, in a battle with orks, the Imperium would feel that brute cheap firepower wins over tactical warp energies.
The IG don't even know Tau, or Chaos is involved on the battlefield.
Great input...please keep it up. I really do enjoy reading them.

Netharzeem In reply to gyro5 [2010-03-03 12:15:44 +0000 UTC]
yeah...However, the IG are also highly anti-xeno, and as he Tau are in small numbers, the IG would probably just wipe the Tau off the face of this damned planet, send a stress call for the one of the chapters and hold the lines till they come.
They could, and have done, something like that in the past. I wouldn't be surprised if this would be the same.
3 worst case scenarios would be:
1)Orbital bombardment on the Tau
2)Virus bomb the planet and ensure that no Chaos nor Tau will live.
3)Chaos consumes the planet. (Why did I write that? The old man is a chaos soccer of Tzeecth....Tczeeetch....The Bird God! The Weaver of Reality....I think...).
Anyways, lets see how the voting goes.

Wow, that's the toughest choice you've gicen us. I say 1. Honestly I don't know what would I do in Randall's place, probablly I'd gather my courage, walk to the Impact Squad and prey to whatever diety that listens for that squad to fight the demon and win.
Still, he's gonna have to leave his gun so he'll be defenceless and at Impact Squad's mercy...

Looking over the pages, this looks like a tight race with option 2 pulling ahead.
Randall would probably know what all is in that Guard patrol but from glancing through the scope, looks like a fair amount of firepower, and what lingers behind isn't for sure to be a Demon.
I'll say this though: up to this point, stealth has been useful yes, but that's against more mortal beings and with a technological edge. This time, I do fear the thing behind is "other-worldly" and able to track them down easier.
And considering Kai’Faan and his background, I don't see him doing well in continuing to run. Personally, I would pull around the patrol, and then shout from the ruins, "Look out! We're under attack!" and then the Guardsmen will react appropriately. Then use the confusion to slip away.
In any case, I do not agree with leaving my Tau companions behind. They will be killed by both the thing coming from behind, and the Guardsmen. I can't risk having them try and hide somewhere. The winner of the fight in either case would be able to consolidate at some point, and depending on how long or short the fight is will amount to the amount of time gained.
If creativity could be set in, I would combine the two decisions and negate both tactical issues. I wouldn't be worried about being shot so much as I am leaving the Tau companions alone. Option 1 is also very linear and gives room for little flexibility. The other issue is that, if the Guardsmen are going to be engaged with something, then they will call in for back-up, slowing down our progress even more and increase the chances of discovery by the Guardsmen (and all of us consequently getting shot).
Option 2 is just as likely to start a fight anyway. The only question is, can the thing behind us track us around the Guardsmen? If that were so (and I don't doubt), it wouldn't be slowed down at all and just get closer and pounce, because we have to be slow and cautious when following the Stealthsuit.
If Option 2 will start a conflict between the Guardsmen and the "thing", I would be all for it.
If Option 1 guarantees the safety of my companions, and the distraction of the thing, then I will choose it.
In a conflict, I can see the Orks coming around, curious to find out who's fighting without them, which will add to the distractions. Question is, how soon can the Orks get over there before the thing finishes off the Guardsmen? If the thing is smart enough, it might only engage what it has to, and then continue following.
Grr. I still like my plan the best; move around the Guardsmen, then announce an attack and where it's coming from without showing myself, and then keep moving. This ensures that the Guardsmen aren't taken by surprise as I'm sneaking around, gives them a fighting chance, and brings them looking for the opportunity to stop, stall, and attack the thing. It also ensures that I can keep my Tau companions safe.
In all circumstances, speed is essential at this point, and we can't afford confrontation without absolutely needing to. But because I believe combat is the only way of gaining speed, my vote is clear: the thing MUST be engaged and slowed down at all costs, and must be confronted. Option 1 is my vote.

Well said, my friend. Your feedback is invaluable, and I really enjoy reading this.
I will bring across some points to note in the meantime:
As much as I know there are several tactical ways to go about in this situation, Randall isn't a tactically trained as vets. He just got out of bootcamp. As a naive character, his choices are rash and sometimes thoughtless as he gets nervous during extreme circumstances. So, I usually put down choices that a rookie would make in a split decision.
I really don't know what will happen next until the votes come in. So I am trying my best not to plan this whole thing out. With everybody's help, like yourself, the story tells itself. All I want to do is make it enjoyable.
Your reasoning behind each decision is AMAZING. I don't know myself which I would pick, therefore, I leave the hard part to you.
I will note this down as a vote for option 1. This option seems the most exciting and dangerous, but that is how a good story is told.

Not only do I write stories myself, but I also study warfare. In a tactical situation like this what keeps you alive is your decision in the next few seconds. Thinking aloud with a plan is great if you have the time for it.
But I haven't conceived the idea of my characters being rushed for a decision and making an irrational idea from the stress. It happens to us all, we look back and think, *facepalm*! "Should've done that!" For this, I thank you for giving me the idea. Because flawed characters are everybody's favorites.
