                                                  Scene 5 part II

The lights brightens to a late night set with a small grassy plain with a short brick wall behind it. Behind the brick wall is the ocean with a shadowy silhouette of the Statue of liberty. All the Sharks boys and girls are standing in a group with Dino and Alexa standing in front of them. Dino is still peeved about the whole Sarah and Tommy B incident at the party.

Dino: (Passed and is fumed) I told her not to be with those Jets!

Alexa: (Rolls her eyes and stops him) She also has a mother and a father.

Dino: (Still looking fumed) They do not know the country better than she does.

Alexa: (Lightly smacks his shoulder and has a stern look on her face) You do not know it all! (Walks over to the Shark girls who are standing behind her) Girls here are free to have fun. She-is-in-America-now.

Dino: (Exaggerated) But Puerto-Rico-is-in-America-now!

Alexa: (in disgust) Ai!

Dino: (Smirks and cooing while ruffling her dress’s skirt) Alexa Josefina Teresita-

Alexa: (Yanks her dress from his grasp and pouts at him) It’s plain Alexa now-

Dino: (Continuing through) –Beatriz del Carmen Margarita, etcetera, etcetera-

Alexa: (Walks away little bit) Immigrant!

Dino: (Smiles and pulls her to him) Thank God, you can’t change your hair!

Isaac: (Fondling ChaCha’s bleached blonde mop) Is that possible?

ChaCha: (Swats his hand off her hair and turns to face him) In the U.S.A., everything is really. (Puts her hands on her hips and bends forward giving him a full view of her cleavage)

Sadrina: (Smiles) IN the U.S.A., Every store has pretty dresses!

Katrina: (Smiles at her) You think that? Omygosh me too!

Katrina & Sadrina: (Hugs each other cheerful) EEEEEEEEE!!!! (Alexa stops them by covering their mouths)

Dino: (Goes over to Nino who enters reading his book) Nino, how was she when you took her home?

Nino: (Still reading his book) Yeh fine. (Looks up) Dino, she was just dancing.

Dino: (Slaps him in the back of the head.) With an “American.” Who is really a Italian.

Alexa: (Rolls her eyes and says sarcastically) Says the spic. (Smirks at him and crosses her arms)

Dino: (Glares at her) You are not so cute.

Alexa: (Raises an eyebrow) That Tommy B is.

Clarisa: And he works.

Nino: (Smiles cocky and finishes rubbing his head) Psh yeah as a delivery for a rundown Drug Store.

Alexa: (Frowns and raises an eyebrow again) Oh is that so? Well what are you then?

Nino: (Proudly says) An assistant.

Dino:  Si! And Chino makes half what the Italian makes-the Italian is American! (A burlesque oration in mock Puerto Rican accent. Dino starts the first line with her.) The mother of Tommy B was born in Italy; the father still goes to a night school. Tommy B was born in America, so that makes him an American. But us? Foreigners!

Isaac and ChaCha: Lice!

Isaac, ChaCha, Alexa: Cockroaches! (All start to laugh)

Dino:  (Gives them a stern look) Well, it is true! (Walks to Alexa) You remember how we were when we first came! Did you ever think of going back?

Alexa: (Walks over to the other girls) No! We came ready, eager-

Shakira: With our hearts open-

Kristy: With our wallets open-

Katrina and Sadrina: With our shopping bags open-

ChaCha: With our arms open-

Raul: (Smiles cocky and chides) You came with your pants open. (Winks at her and slaps her butt)

ChaCha: (Glares at him) You did, pig! (Slaps him) You’ll go back with handcuffs!

Loco: I am going back with a Cadillac!

Nino: Air-conditioned!

Isaac: Built-in bar!

Raul: Telephone!

Playa: Television!

Macho: Compatible color!

Guapo: A modeling contract! (Looks his refletion on his mirror)

Dino: And a king-sized bed. (Grabs Alexa) Come on.

Alexa: (mimicking) Come on.

Dino: (Smirks and wraps his arm over her shoulders) Well, are you or aren’t you?

Alexa: (Smirks and leans her face closer to his making their lips closer to each others. Says in a lustful tone) You have you big, important war council. (Pulls away making Dino all confused. Grins happily) The council or me?

Dino: (Grabs her again) First one, then the other.

Alexa: (Breaking away from him) I am an American girl now. (Crosses her arms) I don’t wait.

Nino: (Snobbishly raises his eyebrow) Back home, women know their place.

Alexa: (Walks up to Nino) Back home, little boys don’t have war councils. (Pushes Nino to the ground)

Dino: You want me to be an American? (To the Boys) Vamonos, chicos, Es tarde. (A mock bow.) Buenos noches Alexa Josefina del Carmen, etcétera, etcétera, etcétera. (He exits with the boys.)

Clarisa: (Sighs dreamingly) That’s a very pretty name: Etcetera.

Alexa: Ai!

ChaCha: She means well.

Clarisa: We have many names at home. (Smiles)

Alexa: (mimicking) At home, at home. If it’s so nice “at home,” why don’t you go back there? (Puts her hands on her hips)

All of the girls gathers around Clarisa and music to the upcoming song starts playing.

Clarisa: I would like-(A look from Alexa)-just for a successful visit.

Clarisa:
(She sings nostalgically)
Puerto Rico...
You lovely island...
Island of tropical breezes.
Always the pineapples growing,
Always the coffee blossoms blowing...

Alexa:
(Runs up to her and smiles phony)
Puerto Rico...
(Frowns)
You ugly island...
Island of tropic diseases.
Always the hurricanes blowing,
(Swirls her finger up in the air like a tornado)
Always the population growing...

All the girls, except Clarisa, shouts in agreements with smiles.

Alexa:
And the money owing,
(Shimmies her chest)
And the babies crying,
And the bullets flying.
(All of the girls duck)
I like the island Manhattan-

Shakira: I know you do! (Grins bigger)

Alexa:
(Holding an imaginary pipe and puts in her mouth)
Smoke on your pipe and put that in!

All of the girls, except Clarisa, were saying ‘Ai Si!’ or ‘Vive Losa’ and clapping their clap their hands repeatedly. Clarisa sits on a bench with all the girls standing behind her. Alexa stands in front of them and facing them with her hands on her hips.

Alexa:
I like to be in America!
OK by me in America!
Everything free in America!
(Walks away from them a little bit slowly)

Clarisa:
(Runs up next to her)
For a small fee in America!
(Walks away slowly with opening her arms wide)
I like the city of San Juan-

Alexa:
(Pointing to the docks behind them)
I know a boat you can get on.

Shakira, Kristy, Katrina, and Sadrina: (Waving their hands at Clarisa and runs up to Alexa) Bye! Bye!

Clarisa:
Hundreds of flowers in full bloom-

Alexa:
Hundreds of people in each room!

All except Clarisa:
Automobile in America,
Chromium steel in America,
Wire-spoke wheel in America-
Very big deal in America-

Clarisa:
(Pretending to drive an imaginary car)
I'll drive a Buick to San Juan-

Alexa:
(Walks in front of her making traffic signals with her arms)
If there's a road you can drive on.

Clarisa:
(Hugs Shakira)
I'll give my cousin a free ride-

Alexa:
(Shrugs with a confused look)
How you get all of them inside?
(Butts her with her hips)

All except Clarisa:
An immigrant goes to America,
Many hellos in America;
Nobody knows in America
Puerto Rico's in America.

The girls whistle and dance.

Clarisa:
I’ll bring a TV to San Juan

Alexa:
If there’s a current to turn on.

Clarisa:
I'll give them new washing machine-

Alexa:
What have they got there to keep clean?

All except Clarisa:
I like the shores of America!
Comfort is yours in America!
Knobs on the doors in America,
Wall-to-wall floors in America!

They whistle and dance.

Clarisa:
When will I go back to San Juan-

Alexa:
When you will shut up and get gone!

Clarisa:
Everyone there will get big cheer!

Alexa:
Everyone there will have moved here!

The song ends in a joyous dance. The Lights Black Out.
