Oh man, I remember seeing this years ago and falling in love with your human!former designs. In reading your edit about not being too fond of your design, (while I can understand the revulsion of looking back on old art) I really want to offer that, even if it was a design from years ago, it fills me with glee every time I see it.

I remember when I was about maybe 13 years old (24, now, and reigniting my love of Transformers, though I don't mean to date this, or you xD), and seeing this, and absolutely losing my mind because human!Hotshot looked sO COOL.

Anyway, I suppose what I'm trying to say is that this, along with the other humanised formers you did, will always be among my chief favourite pieces of Hotshot, especially. Thank you so much for being such a stellar Transformers artist!

I haven't a clue when you edited your art with those comments below, but I wish to say this now... What on earth is your problem? How on earth can you look at any of these and believe these such, these are the best representations of humanized armada characters I think I have seen and ever will see, yet every single one has an edit from you saying they such and you hate them. I understand you have the right to your opinion, I understand that and I am not trying to change it, but I just don't understand how you can hate these. The only one I can kind of understand might be lacking is Cyclonus, and that's only because of his face seeming like he too a few too many drug hits on the job. I don't with to seem annoying, but I don't see how you can see these as "sucking" in any meaning of the word, so why do you hate your art so much? I cannot find one thing that I can dislike besides the Cyclonus face remark, so honestly I feel you are suffering from immense self criticism.

My reasons:
I'm not happy with the style I drew them in; I've moved forward and when I see these I see a lot of mistakes that are charming to me(in that I like to remember the past and how much fun I had coming up with these), but I also see laziness in them. I remember saying "oh, I'll just put this or that there so I don't have to think too much about functional costume design or posing the characters in a way to properly elaborate who they are." They're really cluttered designs and the character silhouettes are way too confused.
The channel shifting effect was fun, but I abused it a lot back then and I get a headache seeing how many times I've shifted the R/G/B channels.
But that's the catch-all on these.
This one specific, my problem is the bent cannon on his back put away in such a ridiculous carrying case on a backpack that could have easily been designed more streamlined/simple for an actual person to carry. His lower torso is way too shrunk and his legs bother me so much- as do the belt and thigh pouches(it's like the EXTREME! designs from the 90s era of comics). I'm not a fan of his goggle design here, nor just how I translated his colors/design into clothing.

Don't get me wrong, I see little things I liked in these designs; and the overall concepts throughout each aren't terrible, but I'm not a fan of them anymore. I entertain the idea of revisiting these designs. I think they'd be fun to re-translate and add/fix the things I don't like just to give a clear idea of what it is I'm not a fan of with them; maybe some day in the future I will.
I certainly appreciate anyone that still finds these designs nice, and I don't mean to offend anyone with how much they annoy me. I don't hate that I drew them, nor do I hate them so much that I feel they should be removed, BUT I do hate them in a way where I see a chance to redraw these. Maybe if I sit down and try at these guys again, I might find myself actually finishing the whole cast of Armada guys like I wanted to, I dunno lol.
THAT said, I'll always suffer from self-criticism. As an artist, I feel I always will; but that's good. So long as I don't let it destroy or cripple me artistically, I can use it to try and advance towards a style I can be consistently happy with, versus making this face: ):C at it all the time.
c: Thank you very much for the comment- and yes- Cyclonus' face made him look WAY too messed up from drugs, hahah!

Well, I can understand what exactly you mean to an extent really, some Armor pieces seem a bit impractical as well as some weapons seeming a bit off center or crooked and such though I still find little bits like that enjoyable, perhaps battle damaged from overuse in war, and over bulked armor kibble on them to prevent as many injuries in some of their cases. In short I guess I can understand where you are coming from here even though I am not exactly an artist nor even one whom doodles often since I lack the artistic talent to even draw a box. None the less, I still genuinely enjoy your concepts even if you do feel they were not honed well. If you ever do decide to redo the armada cast, which I would no doubt love to see, I would also love to see how you would picture your favourite minicons in human form or even possibly a reversal, seeing how the three kids would look as Autobots (though that one might not be as interesting which is why no one has done that yet). Well, either way, I am sorry to have bothered you over such a subject and I hope you continue with a lovely day, dyemooch.

Are you referring to the parenthesis after "Hot Shot"? Hot Rod was his Japanese name, if that's the case. That's the only mention of Hot Rod I see- other than that, from what I'm sure I remember, Armada Hot Shot is not G1 Hot Rod.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GreeniePixie019 In reply to dyemooch [2008-09-11 04:17:10 +0000 UTC]

it really did say his original name was hot rod and that's true he's in the transformers animated movie.. hold on let me get the article..

it says this .... The second character called Hot Shot by Hasbro appeared in the Armada, Energon and Cybertron lines. Although seemingly two different, but similar, characters by Takara, he was portrayed as a single evolving character when Hasbro made Cybertron part of their Unicron Trilogy. He bears several personality similarities to the Maximal Cheetor and the G1 Autobot Hot Rod.

and then there's more I KNOW i saw that they said he went from hot rod to Hot shot (even my firend admited it she knows everything about transformers) and I WONDERED if cheetor was the beastwars bot hotshot!! (they don't admit that probobly but i remmeber long ago from the show they didn't say the names of the robots until after they scanned the creatures then their names changed) sorry i'm babbling anyway here's the link...[link] )

Armada is a reboot, not in the same continuity as the 80s movie (and cartoon) even though much is similar.

In the Japanese version of Armada, Hot Shot was called "Hot Rod" throughout the series - never Hot Shot. But in America, he was called "Hot Shot" throughout - never Hot Rod. His name was changed in a 'the dubbers decided to call himself something different' sort of way.

It gets confusing, because there was a Hot Rod whose name was changed in the course of a story: In the 1980s movie Hot Rod becomes Rodimus Prime when he gets the Matrix of Leadership.

And the Armada character Hot Shot and the 80s character Hot Rod are similar in personality, and both wind up becoming the successor of Optimus Prime. But they are not the same person. Armada Hot Shot is the second Hot Shot because the first Hot Shot was in Robots in Disguise, which came right before Armada.

In Japan, Cybertron was considered to be a completely different universe from Armada, just as Armada is a completely different universe from the 1980s series. The American writers decided to make Cybertron a sequel to Armada and Energon, so the character known in Japan as Exillion was called Hot Shot in America because the two were so similar.

It becomes confusing only because America used the name "Hot Shot" for the character that Japan called "Hot Rod." But remember, Japan didn't call the original Hot Rod "Hot Rod," but "Hot Rodimus." So, if you take the American or Japanese version alone, as both were meant to be taken, the characters don't have the same name. It's like this:

Japan:
In the 80s, Hot Rodimus becomes Rodimus Convoy.

In Robots in Disguise, which isn't in continuity with the above (though after both are long over, the writers will later decide it is) there's a character named either Autofire or Artfire (Translation of proper names isn't an exact science, as you've probably gathered by now if you're into anime.)

In Armada and Energon, which are not in continuity with either of the above, Hot Rod (no -imus) is similar in personality to the 80s character Hot Rodimus.

Rodimus Convoy appears in Energon, but he isn't Hot Rod: he and Hot Rod exist at the same time, and remember, in Japan, Hot Rod is not Rodimus Convoy's former name: Hot Rodimus was.

Later, in Cybertron, new character Exillion is a lot like both Hot Rod and Hot Rodimus. He is eventually upgraded into a new form, becoming Exigeyser.

America:
In the 80s, Hot Rod becomes Rodimus Prime.

In Robots in Disguise, which isn't in continuity with the above (despite a few similar events in both shows' backstories) there's a character named Hot Shot.

In Armada and Energon, which are not in continuity with either of the above, Hot Shot is similar in personality to the 80s character Hot Rod.

Rodimus (no "Prime," to the dismay of many) also appears, in Energon. He isn't Hot Shot: he and Hot Shot exist at the same time, and Hot Shot isn't Rodimus Prime's former name: Hot Rod was.

Later, In Cybertron, Hot Shot - the same one as seen in Armada and Energon - is still around. He is eventually upgraded, but still calls himself Hot Shot. (The toy is called Cybertron Defense Hot Shot.)

As for Cheetor... well, the Hot Shot type of character is a popular archetype in Transformers - the young, brash rule-breaker with a lot of potential. It doesn't mean they're all the same person. You'll notice Bumblebee in Animated is a lot like Hot Rod, Hot Shot, and Cheetor. And in RID, where Hot Shot is (apparently; I haven't seen much RID) very different, you'll find another character, Side Burn, very familiar.

See? All very simple.

From what I've read of Beast Wars, it takes place long after the original 80s series, but time travel places them on Earth millions of years ago. Starscream and Ravage are confirmed to be the same characters as the 80s version, but not many others, and it's highly unlikely that the new villainous Inferno and the old heroic Inferno are the same person. And Megatron's known to have taken on the name of the original Megatron, explicitly not being the same character. The others, I'm not sure about, though Optimus Primal has certainly shrunk if he used to be Optimus Prime.

As for Cheetor, I suppose it's not out of the question that he was once called Hot Shot, but it sure wasn't suggested onscreen... we first hear the name Hot Shot in "Robots In Disguise." (Which, BTW, is what followed Beast Machines. It was the first total reboot, and you had the Autobots - much like the 80s ones - versus the Predacons, who were weren't based on actual Earth animals.)

The new one is called Transformers Animated. Bumblebee's in it, but he's a lot more like Hot Shot than the movie or 80s 'Bee. I've heard that Hot Shot will eventually guest star, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'm sure purists would hate me for it, but even if 'Bee was in the [begin eye-rolling] holy and ultra-perfect original 80s series [end eye-rolling] and Hot Shot wasn't... I always liked 'Shot better, too.

(Nothing against the original, mind you... it's definitely a unique and interesting 80s cartoon. It's just... well, it's a unique and interesting 80s cartoon as opposed to the way scary fanatics see it - as something that's absolutely PERFECT in every way, and all other versions are BLASPHEMY, and how dare we like anything about the others when the ONLY Transformers series worthy of existence is the GLORIOUS and SANCTIFIED Generation One, in the original Optimus Prime's holy name we pray, AMEN. >_< <---For best results, imagine hearing that in Animated Lugnut's voice.

Animated's a great show, even if its drawing style leaves a great deal to be desired. Sari and Captain Fanzone are the best human sidekicks ever, as well. If you haven't yet, you gotta see "Survival of the Fittest."

I wonder what Bumblebee's going to be like in the next movie, now that they gave him his voice back. I liked him better with the strung-together radio broadcasts... it was awesome, and gave him an air of mystery. The car whose radio seems to have a mind of its own...

damn... dear god... lol well anyway from what I remember of beastwars (yeah I got the whole thing about types) the thing is they took on animl siguises after they landed but never admited who was who except for the leaders so it still ery well COULD be hotshot .. I know I know (types) but it's just fun to give them an identity and RID? is that the new animation that just came out? I know bumblebee is sorta like hot shot ... but he's juuuust not enough... when will I ge tto see my HotShot in bay's transformers?! T . T
