This redoubt appears to provide some nice views.  I'll bet the former occupants spent a lot of time contemplating nature as there probably wasn't too much else to do.

No doubt; but then again what do any soldiers in a garrison do to pass the time

Um ... perhaps they went dallied around looking for stray falcons?

Maybe. The modern maltese are certainly very fond of shooting and trapping migratory birds

I think falcon ownership was restricted to the noble class though

Yikes ... now I have visions of migratory birds happily flying, minding their own business until some local spoils their whole day.

Restricting falcons to the nobles (i.e., parasites living off the labor of more honest people) was a good idea.  The result would be freedom for the majority of feral falcons.

Yes unfortunately www.wildlifeextra.com/go/birds…
It's a big issue locally with european parliament trying to curtail hunting and trapping and the locals exclaiming about breach of their (hereditary) rights.... what about the rights of the birds
Some people boycott Malta as a travel destination because of the attitude towards bird life.
The hunters are also a large lobby group so not much in the way of legislation happens locally, it has to be forced from EU. Even then they still shoot illegally and have been known to kill birds (e.g. swans) on a protected reserve.
Next favourite hobby is taxidermy www.independent.com.mt/article…

Hadn't thought of it in quite those terms Good point!

Thanks for the article ... remind me to never go hang gliding over Malta.  Yikes!  Those poor birds ... I seriously doubt that any of them signed on to join in hunting games.  Too bad that birds don't come equipped with air to surface missiles to make things a bit more fair.

And what an interestingly appalling article regarding the illegal taxidermy.  I've gotta admit that didn't do much to bolster my assessment of humanity.  There are times when I don't even want to live on this planet.

BTW, I saw an intriguing film this morning titled Home.  Have you seen it?  www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqxENM…

Re-education is a slow process starting with the schoolkids, meanwhile Malta is not a popular destination with bird lovers.
Unfortunately the birds have their migration routes in their genes
Even the local racing pigeons aren't safe

I totally agree.

Thanks for the link. Have book marked that to watch later, it looks very interesting.
