if you are looking to use it for SCA or other LARPing events, multiple levels of padding will do you just fine.

Thank you! Β I was planning to use chipboard at this point, with some paper mache, but I could definitely use this for thicker pieces! Β Does armor made of this foam get too hot? Β I'd be wearing it in the summer sometimes.

it gets sweaty but I've never felt like I've gotten too hot because of it. My only warning and concern is just to stay hydrated because you will sweat in any armor that's covering a majority of your body or limbs.

Would you say that this would be appropriate for the great Siegmeyer of Catarina?
more broadly knight armor in general?

Do you think this method would work for a Dark Eldar armor?

Would you mind me asking which brand of foam you use? I love how this turned out!

It's called EVA foam, you can find them in many ways, the most common are camping mats and Workshop floor mats for tool sheds and such.

I glued a second piece to it in that shape to help bring a bit more curve to it. by gluing it down all the way it removes a good amount of the give for flexibility and helps it stay in that shape. also wrapping it up or compressing it and leaving it in a specific position over a long period of time will make it naturally bend.

I heard someone say that using a heat gun and bending it also works, do you know if this is truths or lies?

DynamiteBreakdown In reply to SophisticatedSquid [2013-04-10 07:56:05 +0000 UTC]
To answer both your questions, I'm not familiar with the character but if it's super complex I would use an alternate route. As for the heat gun, you can do that but you have to be more careful with this kind of foam as it's not super high density, it'll melt away.

What kind of alternate method do you recommend for something like a full suit of armor?

pleather is fake leather, plastic leather kind of.
if you pin it, the holes normally heal since they're not that big.

the results you got on this are really nice! i've seen a lot of people do foam armor w/ vinyl wrapped over, but rarely show there in progress work and results! Did you have to shape the mat to get it to curve like with a heat source? or is it a natural curve the mat had if it was rolled up and thats why it has that curvature? Sorry to bother with all the Q's!

DynamiteBreakdown In reply to daydreamernessa [2010-08-15 07:39:07 +0000 UTC]
that's totally fine~ It had a bit of a curve due to it being rolled up in it's packaging. To help form it further I glued a second strip of camping mat underneath WHILE it was bent to help keep the shape better.

just a quick question about how much did the pleather and camping mat cost you?
oh and where did you get the pleather (i dont think the walmart near me carries it)
π: 0 β©: 1
DynamiteBreakdown In reply to twilightchildriku [2010-06-03 12:36:00 +0000 UTC]
the camping mat cost around 7-8 dollars and the pleather i got in the fabric district here in LA for about 12 bucks a yard. normally i get pleather cheaper

This is a Mister Tutorial!!! It'll be very useful in the future XD Just let me ask you a question:
Due to the nature of my cosplay, I'll need to make an armor without fabric.
Is it good to varnish the mat, once you put on it some hands of vinavil glue? A friend told me that the glue will "seal" the mat, allowing you to varnish with ease...

DynamiteBreakdown In reply to GT18 [2010-06-03 06:52:20 +0000 UTC]
yeah, if you coat it in glue it'll seal up real nice. but i'd do a couple coats just to make sure it's smooth.
