As far as I know, there are only two ways to hold the bow.Β One is with the wrist cocked all the way back so that the palm heel braces the handle (the middle of the riser section).Β The other is with the wrist and fingers extended, bracing the bow with the Y or V between thumb and forefinger.Β In the case the wrist flexes to the outside with fingers pointing in that direction and thumb pointing to the other side.Β In both instances the humerus rotates to position the elbow to point to the outside (i.e. instead of pointing down.)Β This keeps the string from striking the forearm and especially keeps the base of the ulna (where the exposed nerve of the "funny bone" is located) out of the way.Β In women this is critical, since the female arm bends in at this joint more so than it does with the arm of the male.Β Β
For one familiar with the tension of a bow, the position shown here of the arm in relation to the body is questionable.Β The way to secure a stable shooting position is to counteract the force of the draw by locking out and aligning all the joints involved to form a straight line perpendicular to the spine - and then, with a little extra pull from the shoulderblades, release.Β The arms are then at 180 degrees, making a straight line across the back.
I like how it's painted.Β I like the technique.Β You really know how to paint things well.Β I especially like the atmospheric effects that make for credible depth and sense of space.Β And the emotion is strong, too.Β But the proportions are wonky (small hand, big head) and foreshortening is iffy.Β

very difficult position to master. I love the background and the way you chose to focus. she is so beautiful. she kind ofΒ favors brook shields when she did a lot of magazine modeling backΒ in the early 1980's
