Description

As a geek and an amateur illustrator of dinosaurs, among the mostr frustrating and most difficult thing to draw in the right way are the wings of Aviremigians (i.e. the clade that includes Yixianosaurus, Oviraptorosaurs and Paraves). Expecially when they're folded. Rarely you can see good reconstructions in this regard. The most common errors are the orientation of the feathers (generally in a very chaotic way) and that of the wrist. The latter in particular is the most relevant. The wings of most species more primitive than Aves are different, although at first strikingly similar. How to get them right then? On my blog, I give some useful tips to know how to restore them properly, but in an amatorial way.

1. Bare naked.
2. Arm feathers.
3. Hand feathers.
4. Final result

I hope this will be helpful to you all.

EDIT: corrected some terminology and added thoughts on scapulars.

EDIT: don't miss the final version, with lots of corrections! You can find it here: smnt2000.deviantart.com/art/Re…

Looking good!

 Just wanted to share the project your references have helped me with:
mistingwolf.deviantart.com/art…

The dorsal side looks a little wonky because I kiped it from another drawing I'm working on and then manipulated it like the lazy butt I am, but the other arm looks fine. I'm a bit of a wing nut myself, and based my Utahraptor's off of this: Dakotaraptor reconstruction saurian.maxmediacorp.com/wp-co… and current-day birds of course. I don't LIKE how it looks so off, but it'll do in a pinch (and the huge tail feathers are the result of being in a rush and tired of working with digital media).

Looks good so far!

Just a few notes:

- remember that feathers hide the underlying anatomy so it would be difficult to see some muscle groups and many parts of the naked animal's silhouette;
- try to cover with feathers the palm of the hands too or, if you want to make them visible, use ostriches' and ibis' underwings as a reference to achieve the effect you're looking for;
- also, it seems that Archaeopteryx-like tails were the norm among deinonychosaurs (and perhaps oviraptorosaurs too, link: dinogoss.blogspot.it/2016/05/y… ) so don't worry to add even more feathers up to the base of the tail.

Other than that, keep up the good work!

Ah, yes, I do need to erase some of those lines. xD  It was a quick "fix" from my naked raptor design.

As for the second note, I know most people have the entire limb feathered, but I wanted to go astray and kind of do my own thing, as I wasn't going for 100% scientific accuracy with my character. Honestly, it kind of drives me nuts with some of the current designs, with artists making these animals look just like birds. They are not birds, not quite yet. I wanted to make that distinction; I hope you'll at least approve of my reasoning if not my design. :}  In no way am I a paleo-artist or completely up to date with all the dino info.

I will have to think a bit more on the tail; there are so many articles with different information that it's tough to know what's what. I think until they can find tail vertebrae of the larger raptors that show us where the feathers really were, we can reasonably design as we like. XD

Thanks so much for your critique; sorry my reply took ages.

Wow, I think this will come in handy. Does this apply to Dromeosauridae (i.e. Velociraptor, Deinonychus, etc)?

E-Smaniotto In reply to AHathaway97 [2014-08-25 08:58:32 +0000 UTC]

Of course. Aviremigians (now known as pennaraptorans9 are all the species included in the Oviraptorosauria+Deinonychosauria node.
But I think you should use the updated version smnt2000.deviantart.com/art/Re…

I've always found the reference material for folded maniraptoran wings has been extremely difficult to come by. Even reference material for wing folding in modern birds is strangely difficult to find and decipher. This image is both great looking AND helpful! Thanks!

I wonder about scapulars. Just realizing this from your great tutorial here, but I wonder if there's been any argument for or against larger scapular feathers.

E-Smaniotto In reply to SageKorppi [2012-09-15 11:03:34 +0000 UTC]

There isn't any kind of argument for scapulars. We don't know if they had them or not. I'll write that on my blog then, thanks for the tip

Interesting how the humerus can 'disappear' within the body wall when the arms are folded. I shall keep that in mind.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

E-Smaniotto In reply to Julio-Lacerda [2012-09-15 11:02:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. With all those feathers, the humerus shouldn't be too visible. But maybe I was wrong with that point
