Taarna from "Heavy Metal".I wanted to see this movie for a long time, but I can't find the source to watch until now.
The movie Heavy Metal was never broadcast in my country, and like many other cult stuff, people rarely know it, but I know this movie, particulary Taarna, from a menga I like a lot. The menga (來自魔界 ) is similiar to Twilight Zone, and there is a "story talker" named "Misery" who is a sexy momen who will lead readers into stories, sometime she will play a role in the stories too. The creator said he likes Taarna from Heavy Metal a lot, and Misery was inspired from Taarna, and the fact is, they do have lots in common: Tough, sexy, with a will of steel. I love both of them, they are my idol. XD

Indeed, Avatar is HM meets Nausicaa, Pocahontas, HM and Castle in The Sky in one movie Cameron is a fan of adult animation, anime, animated movies, european animation and Ghibli.
Cameron totally did some HM homages in his new movie to show his love for the original including using a homage to the Barbarian King/Taarna battle sequence during the climax of the movie where Neytiri and Quatrich are fighting each other.
Cameron also borrowed from 1973's Fantastic Planet as well. Who'd win in a fight between Taarna and Neytiri? Both are strong willed female characters that are warriors. Does HM also remind you of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind at times? Taarna share similarities.
Taarna is a good example to prove that women can be warriors too and self-defensive even if she thinks men are pigs because of her looks then she fights back.

I had a crush on Taarna since i was 12 when i saw it 18 years ago on TBS and became one of my favorite animated moveis.

I somehow think the personality of Taarna is more close to the combination of Nausicaa and Kushana. Even as a kid, I also like Kushana, even if she is the (not evil) antagonist in the film. Have you read the comic of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind? It is a really great but rather untended work.
Always wanted to read Akira, I browsed one or two issue of the comic but didn't have the time to finish it. Maybe I shall go for the movie first.
Ghost in The Shell is one of my favorite. It also have my favorite voice actor (as Batou)

Oh my, those are interesting materials. Hope I can still get them online. I know it's not good, but ometimes it's really diffecult to find those works here. After 90s', we almost haven't imported any US cartoons or shows.

And did the movie Avatar reminded you of Heavy Metal? James Cameron is a huge fan of this movie as it's one of his favorite animated movies and used it as one of his influences for Avatar. There are similarities to HM with the exotic world of Pandora, storyline, creatures, sexy half naked alien girls and even there's elements of Den and Taarna.
Camerno made a combination of Heavy Metal, Dances with Wolves, Ferngully, Nausicaa, Princess Mononoke, Castle in The Sky (aka Laputa), Wizards, Fantastic Planet, LightYears (Gandahar) and Star Wars with Dune in one movie isn't that right?

Oh, I didn't know that. Now you mentioned it, I see the reference. Actually, it's like Nausicaa with a less "cult" Taarna, and of course, poccahontas, expecially the "foriegn invador" part. And yeah, Cameron's movie is usually female friendly (have good female characters)

Hunnnn, that I am not very familiar of. Though I think they do share some similarities, since horror/sex elements are quite important in Japanese works.

Yes, I think The Fifth Element definitely got ideas from the first tale(the one after the astronaut). Taxi, run away girl, evil aliens... since I watched HM only a few months ago, so the similarity really surprised me.
